WEEVILS SEEK FIRST WIN IN SECOND ROAD GAMEDespite its best performance of the young season last week against Arkansas Tech, the UAM football team is still in search of its first win of the 2015 campaign. The Weevils will attempting to earn that win in the team's second road game of the year this Saturday in Searcy against 12th-ranked and undefeated Harding.
LAST TIME OUTLast Saturday, the Weevils put together their best effort of the season in a one-touchdown loss to Arkansas Tech at home on Parent and Family Appreciation Day. Final score was 24-17. UAM finalized the scoring with 19 seconds remaining in regulation on a touchdown pass from senior quarterback Hunter Leppert to senior receiver Cody Bordelon. On the ensuing kickoff, UAM's Byron Miller recovered an onside kick attempt, apparently giving UAM one final chance of tying the game, but a penalty for an illegal formation nullified the recovery and ultimately allowed Tech to take a knee to seal the win.
MCGEE STILL PERFECTJunior kicker Jamie McGee remained perfect on field goals and extra points this season in last Saturday's loss to ATU. He made his only field goal attempt against Tech, a 34-yarder late in the first quarter. He is now 4-for-4 on field goals and 8-for-8 on extra points through the first three games of the 2015 season. Two weeks ago against SWOSU, the Lake Charles, Louisiana native moved into second place all-time at UAM in made field goals. McGee and Arkansas Tech's Eric Perez are the only two kickers in the Great American Conference with four made field goals this year. McGee is now 27-for-35 (77 percent) in his three-year career, which is currently the best all-time field goal percentage in school history.
LEPPERT SIXTH PLACE ALL-TIME IN PASSINGSenior quarterback Hunter Leppert has moved into sixth place all-time in passing yardage with his 814 yards through the air so far this season. Overall in his injury-plagued career, he has 4,318 passing yards on 367 completions. Next on the list is Joe Don Samples (1993-96) with 4,963 passing yards. The Minden, Louisiana native has 34 career touchdown passes, which ranks seventh all-time at UAM. He has two 73-yard touchdown passes this year, one in each of the past two games, which represent the 52nd and 53rd passes in UAM history completed for at least 70 yards.
KOSE, MATHIEU AMONG LEAGUE LEADERSUAM senior middle linebacker Ofisa Kose has turned in back-to-back double-digit tackles against SWOSU and Tech, including his career-high of 13 tackles in last week's loss to Tech. Kose ranks sixth in the GAC in tackles (10.0 per game). Senior defensive end Jabari Mathieu ranks second in the GAC with 2.5 quarterback sacks, highlighted by two sacks in last week's game against Arkansas Tech.
SCOUTING HARDINGThe Harding Bisons enter Saturday's game undefeated at 3-0 and ranked 12th nationally in the latest American Football Coaches Association Top 25 Poll. The Bisons are most recently coming off a 70-42 win over Southern Arkansas on the road last Saturday in Magnolia. Prior to that, Harding won big over Southern Nazarene at home 42-0 after escaping Shawnee, Oklahoma in the season opener with a 20-19 overtime victory over new GAC member Oklahoma Baptist. The Bisons sport a unique offense known as the mid-line veer or the triple option. Last week in its win over SAU, Harding posted 566 rushing yards on 64 attempts and just 59 passing yards on only two completions. Harding ranks in the top three of 10 different GAC statistical categories.
51st EDITION OF WEEVILS AND BISONSSaturday's game between UAM and Harding is the 51st all-time meeting in a series that began in 1960. The Bisons hold a slight advantage all-time at 26-24 and have won four games in a row over the Weevils. Harding beat UAM 55-15 last year in Monticello.
