UAM-ATU SERIES INFORMATION
The Weevils and the ATU Wonder Boys will square off Saturday for the 74th all-time meeting between the two programs in a rivalry that first began back in the 1920 season. Arkansas Tech leads the overall series 45-25-3, and holds the series lead for games played in Russellville at 23-11-2. The Weevils and Wonder Boys have gone back-and-forth since becoming members of the GAC in 2011. Both teams have defended their home turfs during that period, including a dominant 34-0 win for UAM in 2013. Last year, Tech won 24-17 in Monticello.
LAST TIME OUT
The Weevils are coming off a 35-28 win in the 2016 home opener last week against Great American Conference opponent Southwestern Oklahoma State. In a match-up that saw weather play a big factor throughout the game, the Weevils were able to beat the Bulldogs with its passing attack and strong defensive and special teams play. UAM was down early in the second quarter to SWOSU, but two quick scores that included a Cole Sears pass to Jalen Tolliver for a 14-yard touchdown and a 34-yard punt return by Kevin Fitzpatrick for six, made the game 21-14 in the Weevils favor. Arkansas-Monticello kept the pressure on the Bulldogs in the second half as Sears connected with Tolliver once again and the quarterback recorded his second rushing touchdown of the game as well to give UAM the 33-21 lead early in the fourth quarter. With just minutes left in regulation, the Weevil defense made a huge stop to record a safety and seal the victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State, 35-28.
#1 IN THE GAC
University of Arkansas at Monticello junior wide receiver Jalen Tolliver currently leads the Great American Conference in receptions per game (10.0), total receiving yards (338), receiving yards per game (169.0) and total receiving touchdowns (5).
SCOUTING THE WONDER BOYS
ATU was picked sixth in the preseason GAC coaches poll following a 9-3 (8-3 GAC) finish last season and a season ending victory at the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl as well. Arkansas Tech currently ranks fifth overall in the GAC in scoring offense (30.5 points per game), and second in total defense (254 yards giving up per game). Sophomore runningback Bryan Allen ranks fourth overall in the conference with 87.0 rushing yards per game. The Wonder Boys are led by fourth- year head coach Raymond Monica.
