The Matchup
UAM will matchup with Southeastern for the 10th time in their history. SEOSU currently leads the all-time series, 6-3, and have won five straight contests against the Weevils. Last year, the Savage Storm defeated Arkansas at Monticello in Monticello, 21-7.
Coaching Matchup
UAM head football Coach
Hud Jackson is now 32-61 in his UAM coaching career after a win at home last week. He will be facing newly appointed head coach of SEOSU, Tyler Fenwick. Fenwick took over the Savage Storm program this season after six years at the helm of Missouri S&T. It will be the first meeting between Jackson and Fenwick.
Last Meeting
Last season, UAM hosted Southeastern Oklahoma State in Monticello at Cotton Boll Stadium on September 22. The Savage Storm held UAM scoreless until the fourth quarter when
Jeremy Hampton tallied a touchdown reception from
Cole Sears. Unfortunately, it was not enough as SEOSU tallied three scores, winning 21-7.
About Last Week
The Weevils won a shootout game against East Central last week. The two offenses combined for 1,124 yards. UAM outdueled ECU to a 49-46 victory behind outstanding performances from
Demilon Brown,
DeAndre Washington,
Devontae Dean and the rest of the impressive offense.
Josh Marini was also 7-for-7 on extra points and the UAM defense came up with big stops it needed them.
Nationally Recognized Defense
Despite having a down week defensively, UAM still ranks ninth in the country in pass defense allowing just 132.0 yards per contest.
Heavy on the Accolades
Brown and Marini earned top billing in the conference snagging Great American Conference Player of the Week honors. Brown combined for 413 yards of UAM's 600 yards of offense and had five total touchdowns. He also had a few big plays including a 68-yard touchdown run and an 88-yard touchdown connection with Washington. Marini was outstanding converting point after attempts on all of UAM's touchdowns and had two punts for an average of 44.0 yards. He also had a huge 58-yarder.
Big Playmakers
Brown will likely start this week after his performance last Saturday, but he's got quite a few offensive playmakers helping him out. Washington had an outstanding game tallying four receptions for 197 yards and two touchdowns. Dean totaled 99 yards and two touchdowns in the contest against ECU as well.
Alex Day has been solid this season with 35 rushes for 216 yards, while
C.J. Parham has been a great option at wide receiver with 20 receptions for 274 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Sacked lunch
UAM has been one of the top teams up front on defense. The Weevils are currently tied for second in the GAC in sacks with nine for a total of 43 yards. Snagging those nine sacks are
Chase Crosby (2.5),
Michael Jenkins (1.5),
Christian Jefferson (1.0),
Justin Legier (1.0),
Brandon Young (1.0),
Easton Seidl (1.0) and
Stephen King (1.0).
Pretty Disciplined
This relatively new coaching staff of the Weevils have also done a great job of keeping the team disciplined in games this year as UAM is first in the GAC in penalties (23) and second in penalty yards per game (41.4).
Games they Score
So far in 2019, if UAM has tallied any points in a contest, it has been a victory. Both of the Weevils losses this season were of the shutout variety with a 24-0 loss at Harding and a 28-0 loss at Northwestern Oklahoma.
Searching for that Road Win
The Weevils will be searching for their first road victory this year after being 0-2 in places not named Monticello. The Weevils are 3-0 in games at home.
Some Individual Defensive Numbers
On defense, Jefferson leads the team in tackles with 32.
Gabe Brace follows closely behind with 31 total tackles including 1.0 for a loss. Jefferson also has two interceptions in the secondary and Crosby has gotten to the quarterback for 2.5 sacks.
Tyronne Brumfield has tallied a big defensive touchdown on a pick-6 for the Weevils.
Scouting the Savage Storm
Southeastern Oklahoma is 1-4 this season so far. SEOSU's lone win came on the road at Northwestern Oklahoma State, 24-15. Last week, Southeastern was bested by Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia, 27-14.
Air Attack
The Savage Storm have been paced by their quarterback, Rollin Kinsaul who is 80-for-140 for 854 yards and five touchdowns. Felton Hatcher and Braxton Kincade have been his top targets with Hatcher snagging 28 passes for 345 yards and Kincade grabbing 22 receptions for 328 yards and three touchdowns.
The Difference for Defenses
Although it is a decent team offensively, Southeastern has struggled to hold onto the football. They are currently last in the conference in turnover differential at -11.
Defensive Playmakers for the Storm
Conner Swope leads the roster in total tackles with 50. He also has 6.5 tackles for a loss of 16 yards and two pass breakups. Andrew McBeth has done a good job getting to the quarterback leading the team in sacks at 4.5.
