The Matchup
UAM will host Southern Nazarene for the seventh time in its history and also for week seven this season. The Weevils have a 5-1 series lead over the Crimson Storm and are currently riding a two-game winning streak. Last year, Arkansas at Monticello traveled to Southern Nazarene and earned a 35-12 victory.
Coaching Matchup
UAM head football Coach Hud Jackson is now 33-61 in his UAM coaching career after his second consecutive win last week. He will be squaring off with Andy Lambert, who is in his fourth season at SNU and has amassed a record of 11-28 in those four years.
Last Meeting
UAM last played SNU on the road on October 13, 2018. The Weevils won that one, 35-12, and were led by Cole Sears who was 8-for-14 with 133 yards and a touchdown. He also tallied a rushing TD in that contest as the UAM defense kept SNU at bay, holding them to -1 passing yards.
About Last Week
After coming off an offensive showing two weeks ago, UAM was outstanding on defense last week defeating Southeastern Oklahoma State on the road, 9-7. The Weevils forced four turnovers including one late that would help them seal the victory.
Still in that top 10
UAM bounced back last week with a solid defensive game overall against the Savage Storm, which has helped them remain 10th in NCAA Division II in pass defense allowing 135.3 yards per game.
Homecoming History for Hud
The Weevils have been pretty solid during homecoming dating back to 2011. Since head coach Hud Jackson took over the program that year, UAM is 6-2 on homecoming games.
Best record since 2008
UAM got the win on Saturday to improve to 4-2. It's the team's best six-game start since 2008, when it was also 4-2. That season, the Weevils finished with a 7-4 record.
Back-to-Back for Marini
Following another solid week on special teams, kicker/punter Josh Marini snagged his second consecutive Great American Conference Special Teams Player of the Week award. Against the Savage Storm he had eight punts for 314 yards for an average of 39.3 yards per punt and had a long punt of 51 yards. He also pinned Southeastern inside their own 20 seven times.
Defense Holding Strong
It was a solid day last Saturday on defense as UAM held SEOSU to just seven points. They made several key stops in the contest and forced four turnovers. The biggest turnover happened to be on the final drive for Southeastern. With the Storm driving, the Weevils forced a fumble and Stephen King recovered the ball with 2:16 left on the clock allowing UAM to run out the clock on the final drive en route to the victory.
Sacked lunch
UAM has been the best team in the GAC in sacks with a league-leading 12 for 68 yards. This continued last week with Brandon Young snagging 1.5 sacks, Michael Jenkins tallied one and Isiah Woods registered a half-sack.
Young Creeping Closer to TFL Record
With Brandon Young's 1.5 tackles –for-loss last week, he is creeping closer to the UAM career tackles-for-loss record of 28.5 set by Ronald Neal (1987-90). He is behind Melvin Patrick (1980-83) in the category who is second with 28.0.
One for the Road
With the Weevils win on Saturday, UAM earned its first road victory of 2019 having lost in their previous two road contests. Currently, UAM has three road contests remaining on its regular season schedule.
Home Strength on Homecoming
Although UAM has just one of its four wins on the road, it is undefeated at home with a 3-0 record. Arkansas at Monticello, Ouachita Baptist, Henderson State and Harding are the only four teams in the GAC with undefeated home records.
Rushing attack for UAM
Devontae Dean has led the rushing attack for the Weevils, especially in the last two weeks. He has rushed for 152 yards and 3 touchdowns in his last two contests and has averaged 4.9 yards per carry in that stretch. Quarterback Demilon Brown has also been solid on the ground with a combined 285 yards and three touchdowns.
Top Tier Defense
Like mentioned before, UAM has been solid on defense this year with a lot of that being do to getting to the quarterback. However, the Weevils have gotten some stellar play from their defensive backs as well. Christian Jefferson is second on the team in tackles with 36, has two interceptions and 1.0 sack. Kerenzo Credit has been tough to catch passes off of as well tallying six pass breakups and an interception.
Scouting the Crimson Storm
Southern Nazarene enters Saturday's game with a 2-4 record and is really middle of the pack in several GAC categories. They do struggle to put points on the board ranking 11th in points per game (15.5) and 12th in total offense (241.2 ypg). Their passing defense has been solid this season placing 5th in the league (159.2 ypg), and they also are second in the conference in turnover margin (+2).
Stopping a Run-and-Gun QB
Most of their offensive output flows through their quarterback, Gage Porter. Porter leads the team in both rushing (398 yards) and passing (597 yards), and has combined for eight total touchdowns.
Defensive Playmakers for the Storm
Josh Jordan and Jake Hanson are tied for the team-lead in total tackles with 47. Jordan also has two interceptions to go along with 1.0 tackle for loss. Landon Walker has managed 2.0 sacks for 17 yards and a pass breakup. Jakel Davis has 31 tackles of his own, two interceptions and a team-best six pass breakups.
