The Matchup
This week's meeting between East Central and UAM will be the 14th contest in a series history that dates back to 1969. Although there was a break in the action from 1993 to 2011, in the Great American Conference era, the Tigers are 6-2 against the Weevils, and won last year's contest, 29-27.
Coaching Matchup
UAM head football Coach Hud Jackson is now 31-61 in his UAM coaching career after the loss last week. He will be going up against Al Johnson, who is in his second year with East Central and has amassed a 4-11 record thus far. In that stretch, he is undefeated against Arkansas at Monticello after earning the victory in 2018.
Last Meeting
Last season, UAM played East Central in Ada, Oklahoma at Koi Ishto Stadium. The Tigers won that contest, 29-27. The Tigers went ahead of the Weevils 26-21 to begin the fourth quarter and later kicked a 36-yard field goal to make it a 29-21 lead. The Weevils scored a touchdown with 3:49 remaining in the game, but failed on the two-point conversion to tie the contest, eventually falling, 29-27.
Milestone Coming
With the loss last week, Arkansas at Monticello remains still one win shy of 400 wins for the program. Dating back to its inception in 1911, the Weevils are 399-527-25, have had 37 winning season and 10 first-place finishes.
Last week against NWOSU
UAM lost its second road game of the year last Saturday in Alva, Oklahoma at Northwestern Oklahoma State, 28-0. The Weevils tallied three interceptions and lost a fumble for a total of four turnovers in the game. On the plus side, UAM did rush for 215 yards on the ground on 48 attempts for a 4.7 average. And although NWOSU quarterback Trent Easley threw two touchdowns, the Weevils got to him for three sacks and held him under 200 yards passing.
Nationally Recognized Defense
Even after last week's loss at Northwestern Oklahoma State, UAM is still first in NCAA Division II in passing yards allowed, holding opponents to 97.8 yards per game in the air.
Great American Conference Categories
UAM also ranks pretty high in other defensive categories in the conference. The Weevils are second in league in pass defense efficiency (82.9) and third in the league in total defense (311.5 ypg).
Third-Down Stops
The Weevils have also made some big stops on third down this season ranking fourth in the conference in stops. Opponents carry just a 26.9 third-down conversion percentage.
Pretty Disciplined
This relatively new coaching staff of the Weevils have also done a great job of keeping the team disciplined in games this year as UAM is tied for first in the GAC in penalties (19) and second in penalty yards (41.0)
If they score, they win.
So far in 2019, if UAM has tallied any points in a contest, it has been a victory. Both of the Weevils losses this season were of the shutout variety with a 24-0 loss at Harding and a 28-0 loss at Northwestern Oklahoma
If it's home, they win.
Along with the previous note, Arkansas at Monticello also prefers playing at home. UAM is 2-0 at Willis "Convoy" Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium this year and has not earned a win elsewhere.
The First Four
Through its first four games, UAM is 2-2. This record has become familiar in years past. Since the GAC started in 2011, the Weevils have gone 2-2 four times through its first game of the year, with this being the fourth occurrence. In each of those first three times, UAM has finished the season, 5-6.
Some Individual Numbers
Devontae Dean leads UAM rushers with 65 attempts for 262 yards and a touchdown on the ground, while Alex Day is behind him in attempts with 27. He's also registered 168 yards rushing. Demilon Brown, who saw some action last week at NWOSU, is third on the team with 137 yards on 17 carries and has a touchdown. Caleb Canady has thrown for 527 yards and four touchdowns. His top receivers are C.J. Parham (17 rec., 229 yards, 2 TDs) and DeAndre Washington (16 rec. 107 yards, 2 TDs). On defense, Gabe Brace leads the team in tackles with 29. Christian Jefferson has two interceptions in the secondary and Chase Crosby has gotten to the quarterback for 2.5 sacks.
Scouting the Tigers
East Central is 1-3 overall and 1-3 in league games thus far in 2019. The Tigers first win came on their homecoming against Southern Nazarene, 45-7. However, ECU did fall last week to Oklahoma Baptist in a shootout, 50-41.
Tough Ground Game
Despite its 1-3 record, East Central has been a solid offensive team. The Tigers are second in the league in scoring offense and most of that has to do with its rushing attack. ECU has totaled 1,000 yards 13 rushing touchdowns this season. Those 13 rushing TDs are the best in the GAC.
A Big Rushing Weapon
A lot of that rushing success has been due to Ontario Douglas. Douglas is averaging 145.0 yards per game, which is fifth best in Division II. He is also fifth in rushing yards at 580. Those numbers are also good for the best in the GAC.
Quarterback Question
ECU has used a pair of freshmen quarterbacks this season with Kenny Hrncir as the main starter in the first four games. Hrncir thrown for 560 yards, two touchdowns and has thrown three picks, while Taye Gatewood has also played in all four contests and is 23-for-33 with 115 yards and an interception.
Defensive Standouts
On defense, Basiru Jobe has 35 total tackles and leads the team. He's also totaled 2.5 tackles for loss with 2.0 of those being sacks, and has also managed an interception this season. Jalen Baldwin has 20 total tackles; an interception and two pass breakups.
