The Matchup
UAM returns home to play No. 23 Henderson State University in a Great American Conference matchup. It will be the 83rd meeting between the two teams in a history that dates back to 1914. The Reddies lead the all-time series, 48-32-2, and have won eight of the last nine meetings.
Coaching Matchup
UAM head football Coach Hud Jackson is now 34-62 in his UAM coaching career following a road loss at Oklahoma Baptist last Saturday. He will be going up against Scott Maxfield who is in his 14th season at the helm of the Reddies and he has amassed a record of 106-55.
Last Meeting
The last time these two teams met was on November 3, 2018 at Henderson State. The Weevils won that matchup, 24-17. UAM scored its touchdowns in a few different ways. Maurshaud Melancon brought back a 52-yard interception return for a touchdown, Cole Sears punched one into the endzone via the run and he later hooked up with C.J. Parham for a 21-yard touchdown reception. Josh Marini was perfect on PAT's and also drilled a 41-yard field goal in the contest.
About Last Week
Oklahoma Baptist snapped a three-game win streak that UAM was riding defeating the Weevils, 33-31. It was quite the battle though as UAM fell behind early. However, the Weevils made it a two-point game with 1:15 left in regulation. Unfortunately, Arkansas at Monticello could not recover the onside kick and lost the matchup. Devontae Dean had an outstanding day on the ground rushing for a career-high 187 yards and punching in two touchdowns. Demilon Brown was 11-18 in the air with two TD's and one INT.
Senior Day
Prior to Saturday's game, UAM will honor the careers of 18 seniors that have been an integral part of the Weevils football program. Deontae Haynes, Maurshaud Melancon, Terry Bozeman, Kerenzo Credit, Christian Jefferson, Brandon Young, Tyler Staples, Josh Marini, Gabe Brace, Chase Crosby, Tavion Bass, LaTravis Daniel, Keaton Phillips, Frank Jackson, Sylwester Augustyn, Lajuan Ransom, Steven King, and Dustin Timm will all be honored in a pregame ceremony on Saturday.
Homefield Advantage
It's no doubt that it is tough to win in the GAC with one team being undefeated, and three others carrying only one loss. With that being said, UAM has been exceptionally impressive on its home field this season tallying an undefeated record at home at 4-0. The last time UAM went undefeated at home for a full season was back in 2000. That year, the Weevils only played three games at home.
Best record since 2008
Despite its loss last week, UAM can still finish with its best record since 2008. UAM is 5-3 in 2019 and the last time it started better through eight contests was 2008 went it was 7-2 at this point that season.
Woah, this has been quite the rush
The Weevils have been outstanding this season on the ground. UAM currently ranks second in the GAC in rushing averaging 241.6 yards on the ground per game. They have recorded 5.1 yards per carry, 16 touchdowns and 1,933 yards. Last week was no different in that aspect combining for a season-high 366 total yards on the ground.
Dominating Devontae (We'll just leave this here)
Dean continued his bid for one of the best running backs in the conference last week with his 187 rushing yards and two touchdowns at Oklahoma Baptist. He's averaging 88.5 yards per game and has totaled nine TD's and 708 yards.
A chance at history?
With Dean and Brown running the ball at such an impressive rate, there's a chance that the Weevils could have their first 1,000-yard rusher since 2008 (Scott Buisson, 1,319). There's also a chance that the Weevils can have two 1,000-yard rushers for the first time ever with Brown at 643 total rushing yards.
Finding Washington
Although he's been a little dinged up this season, All-American tight end/wide receiver DeAndre Washington is quietly putting together an impressive junior season. Last week he had a pair of reception touchdowns and has totaled 394 yards on 25 receptions and has six total TD's.
Getting to the Quarterback
Although OKBU quarterback Preston Haire had a pretty impressive day against the UAM defense, the Weevils still got to him for a pair of sacks, and UAM is still tied for second in the conference in total sacks with 14.
Some other stats on Defense
Gabe Brace leads the team in tackles with 51, while Brandon Young is tops on the roster in tackles for loss with 9.0. Two players on UAM's defense have 3.5 sacks in Young and Chase Crosby. UAM has six players with at least one interception in Christian Jefferson (2), Jonathan Scott (1), Easton Seidl (1), Bryce Anthony (1), Tyronne Brumfield (1) and Kerenzo Credit (1).
Looking for a W over a Nationally Ranked opponent
Saturday's contest will be the second time that UAM has faced a nationally ranked opponent this year with Henderson State ranking 23rd in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll. Previously, UAM lost at No. 22 Harding University on September 14. UAM is looking for its first win over a nationally ranked opponent since October 7, 2017 when it defeated No. 24 Arkansas Tech.
Scouting the Reddies
Henderson State has been one of the top teams in the country this season for good reason. The Reddies are first in the GAC in scoring offense (35.0), second in total offense per game (419.5), third in scoring defense per game holding opponents to just 15.9 points per game and they are fourth in total defense at 321.8 yards per game.
Stopping Stammetti and the weapons
The Weevils will be going up against one of the better quarterbacks in the league in Richard Stammetti. So far in 2019, Stammetti is 164-for-263 with 19 TD's and 8 INT's. His main targets have been L'Liott Curry and Chase Lodree, who have over 500 yards receiving. Curry also has 10 of Stammetti's 19 touchdowns.
Top Defenders for HSU
Defensively, Henderson State has a pair of defenders with over 50 tackles this season in Colby Turner (54 tot., 1.5 TFL, 2 PBU) and Mercardo Anderson (50 tot., 9.0 TFL, 2.0 sacks). Antoine Roshell has also been impressive at stopping the ball behind the line totaling 26 tackles with 4.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks.
