Last Meeting
UAM and SAU last met on November 10, 2018 on the final game of the regular season. The Weevils won that matchup, 20-17, after scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter and hitting a game-winning field goal as time expired for the win. It was a 34-yard kick from
Josh Marini that sent Monticello into a frenzy on Senior Day. Other top performers in that contest were
Cole Sears who threw for 236 yards and touchdown, while
Steven King plunged a rushing TD into the endzone.
About Last Week
UAM ran into the top team in the GAC and the fifth-best team Division II in Ouachita Baptist University last Saturday and lost, 35-7. The Weevils had a hard time stopping the rush with OBU's running back Brocket Brown scoring four touchdowns. UAM's lone score was by running back
Alex Day from 12 yards out.
Battle of the Timberlands
The Battle of the Timberlands dates back to 2012 with the winner of this rivalry being able to take home the traveling trophy. Currently, the trophy sits in Monticello, but since the Battle of the Timberlands inception in 2012, the Muleriders are 5-1.
Rushing Attack
Even with the loss, UAM still managed to run the ball over 100 yards last week for the sixth time this season. Although it did not have a 100-yard individual rusher,
Logan Penn,
Demilon Brown, Day and
Chris Hargraves combined for 164 yards and a touchdown. This year, the Weevils have averaged 231.9 rushing yards per game, which is third in the GAC.
Devontae and Demilon
At the heart of those rushing statistics are
Devontae Dean and Brown. The pair have combined for 1,512 rushing yards of their own and 14 of UAM's 17 rushing TD's. Dean enters this final game of the regular season with 792 yards, while Brown has totaled 720. UAM has not had a 1,000-yard rusher since 2008.
Air Attack
Brown has also had some success through the air as well in the past couple of weeks. In the month of November, he is 27-for-39 with 362 yards and two touchdowns.
Targeting Washington and Parham
Brown's main two targets have been
DeAndre Washington and
C.J. Parham. In 2019, Washington has 35 receptions for 535 yards and 6 TD's while Parham has 35 catches of his own for 463 yards and 4 TD's.
Still Sackin'
UAM's defensive story this season has been its solid play from the defensive line. The Weevils still rank third in the GAC in sacks against with 17 for -90 yards.
Brandon Young has led that category with 5.5 sacks, while
Chase Crosby (4.5),
Michael Jenkins (2.5),

Easton Seidl (1.0),
Steven King (1.0) and
Isiah Woods (0.5) have all followed behind.

Scouting the Muleriders
Southern Arkansas ranks in either the middle of the pack or up front in most of the main offensive and defensive categories. SAU carries a 7-3 record mostly due to its solid defense.
