UAM comeback falls short, loses last game at Southern Arkansas, 34-32

The UAM football team lost in its final game of the 2019 season on the road in Magnolia, Arkansas at Southern Arkansas in the Battle of the Timberlands, 34-32. The Weevils nearly made a comeback scoring 15 points in the fourth quarter but were unable to finish it off.

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello football team lost in its final game of the 2019 season on the road in Magnolia, Arkansas at Southern Arkansas University in the Battle of the Timberlands, 34-32. The Weevils nearly made a comeback scoring 15 points in the fourth quarter but were unable to finish it off.
 
The Weevils were plagued by turnovers in the first half falling behind at the break, 31-10. In the second half, UAM held SAU scoreless in the third quarter and cut the deficit to 14 points. SAU would kick a field goal to open fourth quarter scoring, but UAM managed a pair of touchdowns in the final five minutes. Unfortunately, the Weevils could not recover the onside kick and lost the contest, 34-32.
 
SAU opened scoring in quarter one just a minute and a half into the contest. To conclude a three-play 57-yard drive, Hayden Mallory hit Jaidon Parrish for a 45-yard touchdown pass to put the Muleriders ahead.
 
The Weevils did respond with a scoring drive of their own. Eight plays and 49-yards later, Josh Marini drilled a 39-yard field goal to make it 7-3 SAU.
 
With time winding down in the first quarter, Southern Arkansas drove down the field for its second touchdown of the game to finish off a seven-play 55-yard drive.
 
On the kickoff, Jeremy Hampton got the ball at UAM 10-yard line, slipped a few tackles and was off to the races returning it for a 90-yard touchdown. After the PAT, the Weevils were behind, 14-10.
 
Southern Arkansas later responded to begin the second quarter tallying another touchdown to finish a seven-play 48-yard drive.
 
Four plays into the Weevils next drive, there was a fumble and it was recovered by SAU. The Muleriders responded with a field goal to take a 24-10 lead.
 
SAU later got the ball back in the final three minutes of the half and marched down the field to score another TD. After the extra point, time had expired, and the Muleriders took a 31-10 advantage into the break.
 
There was just one score in the third and it really changed the momentum of the contest. The Weevils finally got their first offensive touchdown when Demilon Brown hooked up with DeAndre Washington for a 16-yard TD. The PAT was good, and it was a 31-17 SAU lead.
 
The Muleriders responded with a field goal to start the fourth shaving five minutes and 16 seconds off the clock.
 
The Weevils answered a few drives later. To conclude a four-play 74-yard drive, Brown hit one of his favorite targets in C.J. Parham for a 56-yard touchdown catch. UAM then got a two-point conversion making it a nine-point SAU lead.
 
UAM then held SAU to just seven yards on its next drive and with 2:30 remaining on the clock, the Weevils marched down the field. Brown hit Hampton for a one-yard TD with just 59 seconds on the game clock. After the PAT, the Weevils trailed, 34-32.
 
The Weevils then attempted an onside kick, but it was recovered by the Muleriders and they went on to win, 34-32.
 
Brown capped off a very impressive freshman season with a big day going 13-of-15 for 223 yards and three TD's. He also had 83 yards rushing on the day.  
 
Parham was Brown's main target tallying seven catches for 113 yards and one TD.
 
Washington and Hampton also managed one reception touchdown apiece, with Washington snagging four receptions for 91 yards.
 
Hampton had two touchdowns including the 90-yard kick return touchdown.
 
Defensively, Brandon Young continued his impressive senior year with seven total tackles, one sack and four quarterback hurries.
 
Christian Jefferson managed 15 tackles, a forced fumble and had 1.5 tackles for loss.
 
With the loss, UAM finishes the season with a 5-6 record. Southern Arkansas improves to 8-3 on the year.
