The Matchup
UAM will head to Arkadelphia, Arkansas to play No. 5 Ouachita Baptist University in a Great American Conference contest. It will be the 79th meeting between the two teams since 1914. The Tigers currently lead the all-time series, 44-33-1, and have won the last two matchups. Coming into this one, Ouachita is 9-0, while the Weevils are 5-4.
Coaching Matchup
UAM head football Coach
Hud Jackson is now 34-63 in his UAM coaching career following a loss to No. 23 Henderson State on Saturday. He's opposite Todd Knight who is in his 27th overall season between Delta State and OBU. He is 130-95 as the head coach of Ouachita Baptist.
Last Meeting
A year ago, UAM hosted OBU on October 27, 2018. The Weevils fell in that home matchup, 35-10. The Weevils lone touchdown was a passing TD from
Cole Sears to
C.J. Parham for 70 yards.
Josh Marini also totaled some points in the game registering a 27-yard field goal.
About Last Week
UAM looked to snag a win last week on Senior Day in Monticello. However, the 23rd ranked Reddies were able to hold off a late comeback by the Weevils, defeating UAM, 27-20. UAM totaled 438 yards of offense in the contest but were unable to score a touchdown late to tie the contest. Parham and
Demilon Brown hooked up for 122 yards in the air and had a pair of touchdowns.
The Last Home Hoorah
Despite the loss on Saturday, UAM finished its home schedule with a 4-1 record. It's UAM's best home record since going 5-1 back in 2013. That season, all five of UAM's wins were at home.
Running wild
UAM did total quite a bit of offense against the Reddies, both through the air, and on the ground. The Weevils continued their impressive ground game with 222 rushing yards on the day. Although they did not have a 100-yard rusher, four different runners only had eight negative rushing yards.
Devontae Dean and
Alex Day combined for 156 yards themselves.
Dominating Devontae (We'll just leave this here)
He may have not exceeded 100 yards on the ground for the first time since October 12th, however, Dean continues his quest to be UAM's first 1,000-yard rusher since 2008 (Scott Buisson, 1,319). He is currently fourth in the conference in rushing with 792 total yards averaging 91.7 per contest.
Quite a pair
Right next to Dean having success is quarterback Brown, who has been also impressive in the run-game. Brown is sixth in the GAC in rushing yards with 677 and the Weevils have a chance to have two 1,000-yard rushers for the first time in their history.
Couple of Targets for Parham
Parham has been one of the main targets this season for the Weevils and that continued last week against HSU. Parham had four receptions for 122 yards, two touchdowns and had a long reception of 65 yards. This season, Parham is tied with
DeAndre Washington in receptions at 29 and has recorded 414 yards and four touchdowns.
Still hitting hard
The Weevils defensive line and linebackers have been great at getting to the quarterback this season.
Brandon Young added another sack on Saturday and is second in the GAC with 4.5.
Chase Crosby is also in the top 10 in the conference in the category with 3.5 sacks.
Justin Legier is second in the league in tackles for loss at 10.0 while Young is fifth at 9.5. We also can't forget about
Michael Jenkins who is seventh in TFL's at 7.0.
Some other stats on Defense
Gabe Brace leads the team in tackles with 58, while Legier follows behind with 50.
Christian Jefferson trails behind him adding 46 tackles. Jefferson also has a pair of interceptions along with
Jonathan Scott who adds two picks and nine total pass breakups.
Facing Nationally Ranked Opponents…Again
Saturday's contest will be the third time that UAM has faced a nationally ranked opponent this year with Ouachita ranking fifth in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll. The Weevils will be facing nationally ranked opponents in consecutive weeks for the first time since 2014. That season, UAM played No. 12 Henderson State and followed that up with a game against No. 9 Ouachita. It's also the first time since 2014 that UAM will face three top-25 opponents in one season, with Harding being ranked 14th that year.
Scouting the Tigers
The Tigers are 9-0 this year and have been doing it well on both offense and defense. Ouachita is second in the GAC in scoring defense allowing just 13.8 points per game and second in total defense surrendering just 300.1 yards per game. They are also fourth in scoring offense tallying 31.1 points per contest. Much of that has been to how well they play on third down ranking first in NCAA Division II in conversions with a 61.5 percent conversion rate.
Offensive Weapons for the Tigers
Brockton Brown is OBU's top rusher with 781 yards and seven touchdowns, while Brayden Brazeal has been solid in the air with 1,351 yards and 10 touchdowns. He is also first in the league in pass efficiency with a 172.0 rating and has tallied zero interceptions this year. His key target has been one of the top receivers in the league in Allie Freeman who has 72 receptions for 698 yards and five touchdowns.
Top Defenders for OBU
On defense, Austin Guymon leads the roster in tackles with 65. He also has 1.0 sack, 3.0 tackles for loss and five pass breakups. As a team, the Tigers have eight interceptions including four from Hayden Lassiter and two from Keandre Evans.
UP NEXT
UAM will conclude its season on the road at Southern Arkansas University in the Battle of the Timberlands. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
