Week 4 Preview: UAM FB at Northwestern Oklahoma State

The UAM Football team will travel to Alva, Oklahoma for a contest at Northwestern Oklahoma State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. from Ranger Field.

 MONTICELLO, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello football team will travel to Alva, Oklahoma for a contest at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Ranger Field.

The Matchup
Saturday's meeting will be the 10th between the two teams in the series. UAM leads the all-time series, 5-4, and is 2-2 in Alva, Oklahoma. The Boll Weevils are riding a two-game winning streak over the Rangers.
 
Coaching Matchup
UAM football Coach Hud Jackson just recorded his 31st career victory last week and is now 31-60. NWOSU is now 17-30 since Matt Walter took over the program in 2014.
 
Last Meeting
Last season, UAM played NWOSU in Monticello at Cotton Boll Stadium. The Weevils outlasted the Rangers by a score of 44-36. Cole Sears was 15-of-28 on the day for 278 yards and a touchdown. He hooked up with DeAndre Washington on that TD as Washington finished the day with two receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, UAM had three different scorers in Ralph Singleton, Nigel Dora and Sears.
 
Milestone Coming
The Weevils are looking for a milestone victory on Saturday. As a program, dating back to its inception in 1911, UAM is 399-526-25, aiming for win number 400. In its history, Arkansas at Monticello has also had 37 winning seasons and 10 first-place finishes.
 
Last week against SWOSU
Against Southwestern Oklahoma State, the Boll Weevils recorded its most commanding victory in a while, dominating the Bulldogs, 44-9. UAM was outstanding on the ground rushing for 348 yards as a team and recording two touchdowns. On defense, UAM tallied three interceptions, including a pick-6, and held one of the top passing offenses in the conference to just 88 yards.
 
Tops in the Nation
Currently, the Boll Weevils defense has some national bragging rights. UAM is first in NCAA Division II football in passing yards allowed per game (77.0), first in defensive pass efficiency (56.4) and second in in third-down conversion percentage (0.189).
 
Great American Conference Categories
UAM also ranks pretty high in other defensive categories in the conference. The Weevils are third in the league in total defense (301.0 ypg), tied for third in interceptions and fifth in the GAC in scoring defense.
 
Individual Leaders
Justin Legier and Brandon Young have been outstanding in getting the ball carrier behind the line of scrimmage with the pair being tied for fifth in tackles for loss with 3.5 apiece, while Christian Jefferson is tied for ninth in the GAC in total tackles with 24. Jonathan Scott is tied for second in the league in passes defended (5) while Jefferson and Kerenzo Credit are tied for fourth with four.
 
Co-Defensive Player of the Week
Jefferson's efforts last week helped him become the first UAM student-athlete to earn GAC Player of the Week honors this season. The senior tallied two interceptions and three tackles in the Weevil win over SWOSU.
 
Shaking Things Up
UAM has never gone 3-0 to start a season in the GAC era, but has now gone 2-1 to begin a season for the fourth time since 2011. The Boll Weevils are now looking for their first 3-1 start in the GAC era and first since 2008. That season, UAM finished 7-4 as a member of the Gulf South Conference. 
 
Home Weevils
Arkansas at Monticello is now 2-0 at home to begin the season. Going back to the end of 2018, UAM is now 4-1 in its last five games at Cotton Boll Stadium.
 
Scouting the Rangers
Northwestern Oklahoma State is 1-2 overall and 1-2 in GAC play to begin the season. The Rangers lone win was on the road at East Central winning, 21-13. NWOSU is currently riding at two-game losing streak after falling to Southeastern Oklahoma State, 24-15, and No. 6 Ouachita Baptist, 31-11.
 
Offensive Woes
As a team, the Rangers have been struggling offensively ranking second-to-last in scoring offense (15.7 ppg) and in total offense (318.3 ygp).
 
Middle of the Pack
On defense, NWOSU is sixth behind UAM in scoring defense (22.7 ppg) and seventh in total defense surrendering 379.7 yards per contest.
 
NWOSU leaders
Jacob Peyton and Calion Baker mostly split the rushing duties for the Rangers with Peyton totaling 184 yards and Baker recording 161 yards. Trent Easley is the team's quarterback and he's totaled 517 yards and two touchdowns thus far in 2019. On defense, James Ellis has 22 total tackles including 2.0 tackles for a loss of 13 yards. He's also registered a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

The Boll Weevils return home to host East Central University at Willis "Convoy" Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium on Saturday October 5th. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
