Weevils Battle Bison in First Road Test

The UAM football team travels to Shawnee, Oklahoma Saturday to play at Oklahoma Baptist at 6 p.m. The Weevils are looking to improve to 2-0 to start the season.

MONTICELLO, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello football team travels to Shawnee, Oklahoma Saturday to play at Oklahoma Baptist at 6 p.m. The Weevils are looking to improve to 2-0 to start the season.

The Matchup

UAM travels to Shawnee, Oklahoma for a matchup at Oklahoma Baptist University on Saturday. It will be the sixth meeting between the two teams in their history dating back to 2015. The Weevils have a 3-2 series lead over the Bison with their last win coming at home 45-37 in 2018.

Coaching Matchup

UAM head football Coach Hud Jackson is now 35-65 in his UAM coaching career after opening the 2021 season with a win last week. His counterpart will be Chris Jensen who is in his ninth year at Oklahoma Baptist and has compiled a 31-47 record.

Last Meeting

The Weevils and Bison endured a tight contest in Shawnee the last time the two teams met in 2019. UAM controlled the ground game rushing 366 yards as a team while the Bison took to the air compiling 355 passing yards. Devontae Dean and Demilon Brown paced the attack for the Weevils combining for 207 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Preston Haire led the air assault for the Bison completing 22-of-38 passing for 355 yards and two scores. The contest came to the wire after UAM stormed back with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but the onside kick fell the way of the Bison who ran out the clock to defeat the Weevils 33-31.

About Last Week

UAM opened the 2021 season in the win column after holding off SNU in the second half to win 30-23. The Weevils got off to a hot start offensively and defensively rolling out to a 30-7 lead at the half behind four touchdown by Demilon Brown. The UAM defense sealed the victory with a fourth down stop with under one minute to play.

Domination by Demilon

Quarterback Demilon Brown dominated on the ground and through the air last week against SNU. He tallied 371 total yards (334 passing, 37 rushing) and four touchdowns (3 passing, 1 rushing) in the contest earning the GAC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance.

Winning Zone Washington

Tight End DeAndre Washington made his impact felt in a major way in the red zone in week one as he linked up with Brown for two touchdown receptions. Washington finished the contest with seven receptions for 101 yards.

Shutdown Street

Defensive back DeQuan Street was a ball hawk in the opening matchup with SNU pulling down a pair of interceptions, breaking up one pass and registering four tackles.

Scouting the Bison

Oklahoma Baptist is 0-1 this season after dropping its season-opener on the road against Ouachita Baptist 38-31. The Bison are second in the conference in total offense (481.0) and passing offense per game (345.0), but rank 11th in rushing defense per game (289.0).

OBU's Biggest Weapon

OBU has the reigning GAC Offensive Player of the Year in Preston Haire who carried the Bison offense last week passing for 345 yards and three touchdowns in a losing effort against Ouachita Baptist.

Top Defenders for OBU

Nick Boone and Tyler King lead the Bison defense each registering double-digit tackles in last week's game. Boone piled 16 total tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss while King added 10 total tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss.

The Weevils return home for Parent and Family Day at Willis "Convoy" Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium next Saturday, September 18. UAM will battle Henderson State at 6 p.m.
