The Matchup
UAM visits Arkansas Tech for a matchup with the Wonder Boys in Russellville, Ark. Saturday. It will be the 77th meeting between the two teams in their history dating back to 1928. The Weevils trail the Wonder Boys in the all-time series 28-45-3. UAM is riding a three-game winning streak against ATU. In the Weevils last trip to Russellville, UAM beat the Wonder Boys 34-16 in 2018.
Coaching Matchup
UAM head football Coach Hud Jackson is now 35-67 in his UAM coaching career after getting off to a 1-2 start in the season. His counterpart will be Kyle Ship who is in his 3rd year at Arkansas Tech with a 3-11 record.
Last Meeting
The last time these two teams met was on September 5, 2019 at Willis "Convoy" Leslie Cotton Boll Stadium. The Weevils won a thrilling overtime battle over ATU 26-23. Josh Marini hit a 23-yard field in overtime to deliver the victory for the Weevils. Quarterback Caleb Canady linked up with his favorite targets C.J. Parham and DeAndre Washington for a pair of touchdowns to lead the UAM offense. Canady finished with 287 yards through the air with Parham being on receiving end for 164 yards on eight catches. On the ground, Devontae Dean led the attack with 74 rushing yards and a touchdown. The Weevils pounded the rock with Dean in the extra period to set up the game-winning field goal for Marini from 23 yards out.
About Last Week
Henderson State handed the Weevils their second-consecutive loss of the season defeating UAM 58-18. UAM fell into an early hole taking a 30-6 deficit into the locker room at halftime. The deficit proved too much for the Weevils to overcome in the second half as HSU continued to find the end zone to keep UAM from making any comeback. Demilon Brown connected with Parham for a pair of touchdowns through the air. Dorian Manuel accounted for the other UAM score on a 15-yard touchdown run. Dean led the ground attack for the Weevils posting his first 100-yard rushing game of the season finishing with 118 yards on 21 carries.
Weevil Way on Offense
UAM ranks seventh in total offense and tied for seventh in scoring in the GAC averaging 390.7 yards and 22.7 points per game. The passing game leads the way for the Weevils as they rate sixth in the conference with 265.7 yards per contest through the air while the ground game ranks ninth averaging 125.0 yards per game.
What Can Brown Do For You?
Quarterback Demilon Brown carries the load for UAM on offense averaging 307.7 total yards per game which ranks fourth in the GAC. He has tallied an average of 260.7 yards through the air and 47.0 yards on the ground through three contests so far this season. He rates sixth in the conference in passing yards per game and tied for fifth with six passing touchdowns. In total, Brown has compiled nine touchdowns on the season with six through the air and three on the ground.
Air Raid Weapons
Three Weevils have more than 100 yards receiving through three games this season. Senior wide receiver C.J. Parham leads the way for UAM with 299 yards and three touchdowns on 21 receptions which ranks him third in the GAC in yards, fourth in catches and tied for fourth in touchdowns. Fellow senior tight end DeAndre Washington has 12 receptions for 173 yards and two touchdowns and sophomore wide receiver LaCedric Smith has posted 163 yards and one score on 10 catches.
Weevils Wrapping Up
Defensively, the nine different Weevils have registered double-digit total tackles through the first three contests. Damarous White leads the way with 15 total tackles including one tackle for loss. The most disruptive Weevil in the backfield has been Charles Cameron who leads the team with 3.5 tackles for loss.
Defending the Pass
Three players have collected an interception so far this season for UAM. DeQuan Street leads the secondary with two picks to go along with one pass breakup. Jonathan Scott and Michael McCorvey each have one interception as well as making an impact in the backfield with two tackles for loss apiece.
Scouting the Wonder Boys
Arkansas Tech is 0-3 on the season with losses to Southeastern Oklahoma State, East Central and Ouachita Baptist. Offensively, the Wonder Boys rank 10th in the GAC in scoring and 11th total yards averaging 18.0 points and 282.7 yards per game. On defense, ATU is surrendering the seventh most points per contest in the conference at 29.7 points per game ranks ninth in total defense allowing 445.7 yards per contest.
ATU Ground Attack
The Wonder Boys use the rushing game to carry the load on offense as they rank fourth in the league in rushing yards per game with 177.3. The combination of Caleb Catie, Jack Lindsey and Ron Thompson lead the ground attack for ATU each sitting in the top 20 in the GAC in rushing averaging more than 40 yards per contest. Batie is the bell cow for the Wonder Boys with 43 carries for 146 yards and one touchdown on the season.
Top Defenders for ATU
Nine players lead the Wonder Boys defense registering double-digit total tackles so far this season. Matthew Minnix leads the way with 17 including one tackle for loss. Tyrus Fort has had a nose for the ball for the ATU defense recovering two fumbles while adding 13 total tackles.
Converting Against the Wonder Boys
ATU is tied for the best opponent fourth down conversion rate in the GAC holding its opponents to 20-percent, 1-of-5, on fourth down conversions. The Wonder Boys are quite as tough on third down, but still rate sixth in the conference holding opponents to 15-of-36, 41.7%, converting on third down.
