MONTICELLO, Ark. - The University of Arkansas at Monticello Athletic Department sends the deepest condolences to the Tatum family after the passing of former Boll Weevil football player, and 2020 UAM Sports Hall of Fame Inductee, John Tatum.
Tatum played football for the Weevils from 1976-81. After suffering an injury his first year on campus, he returned and immediately made an impact as one of the best defensive ends in the conference. A player with great speed and talent, opponents were fearful of running the ball to Tatum's side of the field. Perhaps one of his most impressive plays was against UAM rival, Southern Arkansas University during the 1978 season. One of the few times a team decided to run a ball on John's side of the field did not go well, as he forced a fumble, recovered it and brought 98 yards back for a touchdown.
Tatum made a change his senior year in 1979 to anchor the defense as the team's middle linebacker. His tough play and awareness helped lead the Boll Weevils to the 1979 AIC Championship. For his individual efforts, he was All-AIC and First Team NAIA All-District 17. He was named the 1979 UAM Football Black Athlete of the Year, The UAM Black Athlete of the Year in 1980 and the 1981 Outstanding Academic Achievement Award Recipient. John was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys, but an unfortunate health matter prohibited him from playing.
Tatum was the second African American to graduate from UAM's School of Forestry and has had an incredible professional career at International Paper.
"The UAM family and I are deeply saddened by John's passing," said UAM Chancellor, Dr. Peggy Doss.
"He was an extraordinary person and athlete and will be missed by all who knew him. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, his many friends, and his former teammates during this difficult time. John was not only a remarkable athlete but also a source of inspiration for many. May cherished memories of John bring comfort, and may the strength of unity provide solace in the face of such a profound loss."
Below is a resolution honoring him from the 1979 AIC Championship Football Team:
In loving memory of John Tatum
The Lord is my Shepherd. There is nothing for which I will want. He has made me lie down in green pastures. He has led me beside still waters. Thus, my soul is fully refreshed and stored. He has led me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. And, even though I now walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for He is, always has been, and always will be, with me. His rod and His staff do now sufficiently comfort my Servant's heart. Goodness and mercy have followed me, all the days of my life. And, now that my earthly work and service here are done, I will dwell in the house of the Lord, as a Heavenly Boll Weevil… forever and ever. AMEN.
WHEREAS, in the providence of God, He has brought to sunset the extraordinary life of our brother, John Tatum. The University of Arkansas at Monticello 1979 AIC Championship Football Team is speaking for all UAM Alumni that knew John Tatum. We want the family to know that God has a dominate person with Him, that has an infectious smile and a beautiful heart. John was a very gifted young man. He was just as smart as he was athletic. He was a scholar, a great friend, a proud father that bragged on his children, and a loving son who thrived on his mother's teachings. He has been a positive influence on us throughout his life. He will be missed dearly.
Therefore, be it resolved, that we bow our heads in humble submission to the Master's will and be more determined to live so we may join him in that beautiful home where we feel safe to say he has gone home to be with Him. Resolved further, that we commend the family to him that knoweth best and will always do right. May God bless and keep you all in our prayers.
John Tatum is a prime example of once a Boll Weevil, always a Boll Weevil. His memory lives on throughout his teammates and through the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
The funeral will be held in Harrell, Arkansas at the First Baptist Church. Service is at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 9.
