ALVA, Okla. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello football team will open its 2023 campaign on the road in Alva, Oklahoma against Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Thursday, Aug. 31 with a 6 p.m. kickoff.
Coming off a heartbreaking 20-7 loss to conference rival Southern Arkansas in the Battle of the Timberlands to conclude their 2022 season, the Weevils are hungry for a fresh start and new beginnings as they look towards the upcoming opener with the Rangers.

Hud Jackson.
"Our goal is to compete for the conference championship. Our players and coaches have worked really hard this off season. We realize that every game matters and it all starts against Northwestern Oklahoma. Eat 'em up!"

THE MATCHUP
The Boll Weevils travel to NWOSU for the seventh time since their first match-up in 1993. The all-time series is tied at 6-6, with the win going back and forth each year since 2018. UAM holds a 3-3 record against NWOSU at both home and away.
LAST MEETING
The last time UAM and NWOSU met, the Boll Weevils scored first, courtesy of a 20-yard rush from quarterback
Demilon Brown. The Rangers scored their way to a 26-9 lead as the game head into the fourth quarter. The Weevils found two touchdowns in the final quarter, but were unable to regain the lead, taking the loss with a final score of 26-24. Brown was 20-30 for 163 yards and one touchdown through the air, with another touchdown and 88 yards on the ground.
Jonero Scott rushed for 150 yards on 32 attempts with a touchdown to lead the run game.
NEW COACHING FACES
Not only did UAM change some personnel on the field, but also on the sidelines this offseason. Joining the Boll Weevils this year are Josh Qualls, Curtis Akins, Nate Nelson, Jalon Harbour, and Keontae Larry. Qualls rejoins the UAM staff as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Akins comes on board as the linebackers coach and assistant special teams coordinator, Nelson is the defensive line coach, Harbour is a graduate assistant working with cornerbacks and special teams, and Larry joins the coaching staff as a graduate assistant.
