Adam Buie stepped into the role of head coach for both the men’s and women’s golf teams back in 2018 and will enter his third season.
In the last two years, the golf program has seen positive strides in improving academically and in athletics. Just last year, the Weevils and Blossoms combined for five top-five finishes in events. Academically, he helped coach five All-Academic Women’s Scholars and two All-Academic Men’s Scholars. The men’s team GPA in 2019-20 was 3.33 while the women’s team GPA in 2019-20 was 3.74. He's also guided Kinley Lee to an All-Conference selection in 2019, Wilson Powell to a victory at the 2019 Mississippi College Invite and Leah Rowe to victories at the 2019 Natural State Classic, the Oklahoma Baptist Fall Invite and the 2020 Spring Hill Badger Invitational.
He came to UAM with eight years of experience coaching college golf. He was an assistant for both teams at UNC Pembroke in the Peach Belt Conference. From there he started both of the programs from scratch at the University of West Alabama. After UWA, he was Head Coach at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas, and most recently at Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tennessee.
In his one season with Tusculum, the Men’s team won the home Bob Dibble Classic and the Women’s team won twice. Katie Tomassoni and Ciara Rattana were named All South Atlantic Conference performers. In addition, Tomassoni was named SAC Scholar Athlete of the Year for Women’s Golf. Katie also won individual medalist at the Bob Dibble Classic. Anthony Bolden lost in a 9-hole playoff for individual medalist after shooting rounds of 69-70. Both teams hosted a Fall and Spring event under his watch. 2017-18 the Pioneers averaged the lowest scoring team average in the school’s 20 year history of Women’s golf. Tusculum Women were ranked 30th in the country in DII by Golfstat at the time of Buie’s departure.
While the head coach at Lyon, the Fighting Scots men's team captured a tournament title at the College Spring Classic for their first event win in years. Lyon also posted a third place finish at Cumberland University’s Phoenix Invitational where Josh Lunceford shot a school record 67 in round one. The Lyon teams posted numerous school records including breaking 300 for the first time in school history with 294 in both rounds at Cumberland. The Scots moved up 34 spots in the Golfstat national rankings from the previous season with Buie at the helm. 5 LC golfers earned American Midwest Conference Scholar Athlete Designation. Katherine Bartley earned NAIA Daktronics National Scholar Athlete recognition.
In 2012, Buie started both teams at West Alabama in Livingston. In his four years at the Gulf South School, they made tremendous strides. The Women’s team won three times in three years and two females won individual medalists honors on three different occasions. Both teams scoring average and national rankings would improve each year. In three years of competition the Men jumped from 130th, 94th, and 89th in Golfstat national DII rankings. The Women would finish 74th, 59th, and 33rd at the end of each passing year. Five Tigers were named All Gulf South Conference players and another four times earning GSC All-Tournament team. Two seasons UWA had the Female GSC Freshman of the year. Six players were named All-American Scholar-Athlete and All GSC Academic team. 23 total players were Academic Honor Roll members.
Buie’s teams have always posted team GPAs of 3.0 and higher as Academics have always been important to his squads. In addition, his UWA teams were heavily involved outside the classroom receiving the Community Service award for most volunteer hours.
Coach Buie served as assistant at UNC Pembroke from 2010-2012 where he helped guide the Braves to 11 women's team wins and 6 men's tournament titles. Both teams would qualify for Regionals each of his two seasons there. The Women won the 2011 Peach Belt Conference championship. The 2012 UNCP men's team won the Peach Belt Conference title and advanced to the NCAA II Nationals where the Braves finished 10th. At the end of the season, the UNCP Men were ranked 3rd in the nation by Golfstat. In 2012, Meghan Moore garnered runner-up honors at the NCAA National Tournament. During his tenure at the Pembroke, North Carolina school, Buie mentored 13 All-Peach Belt Conference selections, five All-Americans and four All-American Scholar Athletes during his tenure at UNCP. Twenty-six (26) UNCP players were also named to the Peach Belt honor roll.
He earned his undergraduate degree from North Carolina State University in 2009 while majoring in Sport Management. He earned a Master's degree in Sport Administration from UNC Pembroke in 2012.
Buie played collegiate golf at Lees-McRae College and Montreat College before finishing at NC State. He also served as assistant golf professional at Bermuda Run Country Club in Bermuda Run, NC and Uwharrie Golf Club in Asheboro, North Carolina. He holds the course record at the par-71 Asheboro Country Club with two separate rounds of 64.
