MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men’s basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 69-56 win over Henderson State on Thursday at Steelman Field House.
The win was also UAM’s first Gulf South Conference win of the season. The Boll Weevils improve to 9-5 overall and 1-1 in the GSC, while the Reddies drop to 5-9 and 0-2.
Junior LA Farmer led all scorers in the contest with 24 points on 9-of-20 shooting from the field, including three three-pointers. Junior Sergio Crowe, the current GSC-West Player of the Week, and senior Jerrell Boswell also reached double-figures with 18 and 15 points, respectively. Crowe had a game-high 10 rebounds in the win for his first double-double of the season.
Junior D’Angelo Dean added eight points and nine rebounds in his 26 minutes off the bench.
In a game that saw eight lead changes, UAM had the advantage for the entire second half, growing that lead to 10 points with 11:51 remaining in regulation on a three-pointer by Farmer.
The Boll Weevils ended the game on a 15-3 scoring run in the final five minutes.
Lucas Whisenhunt led HSU with 14 points on 5-of-5 field goal shooting. Zech Smith also reached double-figures with 11 points.
UAM finished the contest shooting 40 percent from the field (23-of-58), 31 percent on three-pointers (9-of-29) and 64 percent at the foul line (14-of-22). HSU shot 39 percent from the field (20-of-51), 39 percent on three-pointers (5-of-13) and 58 percent at the foul line (11-of-19).
The Boll Weevils are back in action this Saturday, January 15 in Russellville, Ark. against the two-time defending GSC champion, Arkansas Tech. Tipoff is set for approximately 6 p.m. at Tucker Coliseum.
