LITTLE ROCK – The UAM Boll Weevils pulled away in the second half tonight from Philander Smith, coming away with the 15-point road win.
Kori Forge got the Weevils (8-2) on the board first with a jumper just over two minutes into the game. PSC got the bucket right back, however, in what would become the first of nine ties in the ballgame.
The Panthers (2-8) led by as many as eight with just over nine minutes to play in the first half, but UAM hung around, retying the game at 33 with 3:14 to play in the half. From there the two went back-and-forth with L.A. Farmer hitting a layup with 26 seconds on the clock to give the Weevils the slim 37-36 lead at the break.
The Weevils continued to battle in the second half and built up several small leads, but each time Philander answered to pull within single possessions more than once. UAM took the lead for the final time with 15:27 remaining, but did not get their lead over ten until they were shooting free throws in the final minute-and-a-half. L.A. Farmer hit two attempts with 1:22 remaining that finally got the lead into double digits, 83-72. Ten of the Weevils final 13 points of the game came at the foul line.
Philander Smith’s Ken Brown led all scorers with 37 points and seven assists. Four Weevils scored in double figures with L.A. Farmer leading the way at 28. Kori Forge finished with 23, Ricardo Hall had 17, and Sergio Crowe added 15.
UAM shot 48-percent on the night, going 27-of-56 from the floor, including 7-of-14 from three. They were 78-percent from the foul line at 26-of-33. The Panthers shot 39-percent from the floor and 34-percent from three. They took just 13 foul shots and hit 10 for 76-percent.
The Weevils will return to Steelman Field House this Saturday as they host Champion Baptist at 2:00 p.m. Please note the time change, as the game was originally scheduled for 4:00 p.m. The game will be the final home basketball game before the Holiday break.
