BLOSSOMS SWEEP ALCORN WITH TWO ONE-RUN GAMES

MONTICELLO – The 13th-ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team used pitching and timely hitting to capture 1-0 and 5-4 wins over Alcorn State on Wednesday at Blossoms Field.

In the first game, the Cotton Blossoms (11-1) received a great effort from GSC-West Division Pitcher of the Week Kayla Jackson (6-0), who tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing only four hits while striking out eight and allowing only one walk. It is her second shutout of the season and the 24th of her career.

UAM won the first game on a two-out, game-ending RBI-single by junior Sarah Hayslip in the bottom of the seventh to score junior Laura Tucker from second base. Tucker reached on an infield single and moved into scoring position on a groundout by freshman Summer Huddleston.

The Cotton Blossoms started the second game with three runs in the bottom of the first inning on three consecutive run-producing at bats. Hayslip started the rally with an RBI double to left center, followed by a pair of RBI singles by juniors Jennifer Hickman and Katie Bowman.

UAM added its fourth run in the bottom of the third on an RBI sacrifice fly from Hayslip to score Jackson from third. Jackson recorded her first triple of the season in the previous at bat.

The Lady Braves (5-2) began their offensive rally with one run in the top of the third inning, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the contest 4-all going into the bottom of the sixth.

Jackson put the Cotton Blossoms on top with what turned out to be the game-winning homerun with a solo shot to left center in the bottom of the sixth, her team-high fourth round-tripper of the season.

Sophomore Faith Lund (2-0) picked up the win in relief, holding the Lady Braves to only one hit in the final 1.2 innings while striking out two and allowing only one walk.

The Cotton Blossoms are back in action this weekend in the UAM Quad State Classic, held at Bentonville (Ark.) High School. UAM opens the event on Friday, February 25 against Illinois-Springfield at 10 a.m. and Oklahoma Panhandle State at 3 p.m.
