BLOSSOMS OPEN GSC PLAY WITH SWEEP OVER CBU

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The 11th-ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team opened Gulf South Conference play with a pair of wins over Christian Brothers on Saturday by final scores of 11-3 and 13-10.

The pair of wins also extended UAM’s streak to 14 consecutive victories.

In the first game, the Cotton Blossoms (19-1, 2-0 GSC) waited until the fifth to reach the scoreboard, but used 11 runs in the frame and held the Lady Bucs (6-9, 0-2 GSC) scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to capture their ninth run-rule win of the year.

In the fifth, UAM had two-RBI hits from junior Jennifer Hickman and freshman Summer Huddleston, but the big blow of the rally was a grand-slam homerun by sophomore Faith Lund.

Junior Kayla Jackson (11-0) picked up the win, allowing three runs (one earned) off four hits with six strikeouts and only walk allowed in her five innings of work.

The Lady Bucs scored their first two runs in the bottom of the second on a two-RBI double by Kathleen Nelson, who was responsible for CBU’s other run with another RBI double in the fourth inning.

In the second game, UAM seemed to be in line for another run-rule victory, leading 10-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth, giving the Lady Bucs one last chance to extend the game. CBU did just that, scoring four runs in bottom of the fifth and three runs in the sixth to trim UAM’s lead to one run heading into the seventh and final frame.

UAM added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI triple by Jackson and a two-run homerun by senior Sarah Hayslip.

The Lady Bucs reached the double-digit mark in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single by Casey King to finalize the scoring.

Junior Amanda Nordberg (3-1) picked up the win after allowing four runs off six hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 4.2 innings of work. Lund earned her first save of the season after allowing one unearned run off two hits with two strikeouts and no walks in the final 1.2 innings.

The two squads are set to conclude the four-game series with a double-header on Sunday at 1 p.m.
