BLOSSOMS BACK TO WINNING WAYS WITH SUNDAY SWEEP

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The sixth-ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team posted a pair of run-rule victories over Southern Arkansas on Sunday by final scores of 9-1 and 13-2.

The Cotton Blossoms (24-2, 7-1 Gulf South Conference) waited until the fourth inning of the first game to reach the scoreboard, but the team batted through the lineup with five hits to score six runs, the biggest swing coming off the bat of junior Kayla Jackson, who belted a three-run triple to left. Sophomore Faith Lund had a solo homerun in the inning, her sixth round-tripper of the year to tie Jackson for the team lead.

UAM scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to capture the team’s 10th run-rule victory of the season. Junior Jennifer Hickman and freshman Brittany Eitel had back-to-back run producing at bats in the fifth, and senior Sarah Hayslip belted a solo homerun in the sixth the finalize the scoring.

Jackson (13-1) earned the win for UAM, allowing only one run in her 13th complete-game victory of the year, which was a solo homerun by Chelsea Knox in the bottom of the second to give the Lady Muleriders (7-21, 2-6 GSC) a 1-0 lead. Jackson did not allow a walk in the win, her fifth time to accomplish the feat this season and third straight outing without allowing a base on balls.

SAU’s Taylor Clifton (2-6) took the loss after allowing six runs off six hits with no strikeouts and two walks in the first 3.2 innings.

In the second game, UAM scored in every inning, highlighted by a pair of three-run innings and a four-run fourth inning to record the team’s 11th run-rule win of the year.

The Cotton Blossoms took advantage of an SAU error in the first to score three runs, highlighted by an RBI single from Lund.

UAM batted through the lineup in the second, adding three more runs with RBI hits from sophomore Jessica Dickey, freshman Summer Huddleston and another from Lund. Dickey’s was a triple to left, her second of the year.

Jackson gave UAM an 8-0 lead in the top of the third on one swing, a two-RBI single through the middle of the infield.

After SAU reached the scoreboard in the bottom of the third on a two-RBI double by Heather Allison, UAM responded with three extra-base hits in the top of the fourth – an RBI double by Huddleston, a two-RBI triple by Hayslip and a solo homerun by freshman Beth Johnson.

Junior Mary Barthel added a pinch-hit RBI single in the fifth to finalize the scoring.

Junior Amanda Nordberg (5-1) earned the win after allowing two runs off two hits with one strikeout and two walks in the first three innings. Junior Randa Perry provided two innings of no-hit relief, and struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth.

SAU’s Julie Essary (3-9) took the loss after allowing 12 runs off 14 hits in the first four innings.

The Cotton Blossoms step out of conference play this Wednesday, March 23 to host Lambuth for a double-header starting at 1 p.m.
