GOLDEN SUNS STUN BLOSSOMS: 5-4, 5-0

MONTICELLO – Arkansas Tech upset the seventh-ranked University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team with 5-4 and 5-0 wins on Saturday at Blossoms Field.

The first game needed 10 innings to decide a winner, with the Golden Suns (14-11, 5-1 Gulf South Conference) coming out on top. ATU’s Shanda Jimeson was placed on second to start the top half of the 10th inning due to the international tie breaker rule. She moved to third on an infield single by Hayley Hudson and stole home in a rundown situation for what ended up being the game-winning run.

The Cotton Blossoms (26-4, 7-3 GSC) were set down in order in the bottom of the 10th.

UAM started the game’s scoring in the bottom of the third on an RBI double from senior Sarah Hayslip, and added two more runs in the fourth due to an illegal pitch thrown by ATU’s Shelby Jo Fenter and an RBI single by junior Laura Tucker. Junior Randa Perry scored from third on the illegal pitch.

The Golden Suns trimmed UAM’s lead to one in the top of the sixth with back-to-back run-producing at bats – an RBI sac bunt by Amy Kilpatrick and an RBI single by Natalie Magie.

In the seventh, Fenter gave ATU a one-run lead with a two-run homerun to left field, but junior Kayla Jackson responded in the bottom half of the frame with a solo shot to left field to send the game into extra innings. However, that was UAM’s last run of the game.

Fenter (5-4) earned the win for ATU after allowing four runs off eight hits with 11 strikeouts and five walks in her complete-game outing. Jackson (14-2) took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) off 12 hits with seven strikeouts and one walk in the complete 10 innings.

In the second half of the twin bill, the Golden Suns took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run homerun by Hayley Hudson. ATU added two more runs to its lead with another two-run homerun in the fifth, this time from Fenter for her second round-tripper of the day.

ATU finalized the scoring in the sixth with Hudson scoring from third on a wild pitch.

UAM left eight runners stranded in the loss after leaving 10 on base in the first game.

Hayslip led UAM with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate in the second game with a pair of doubles.

Junior Amanda Nordberg (5-2) took the loss for UAM after allowing all five runs off six hits with five strikeouts and no walks in the first five innings. Alex Doyle (6-6) earned the win for ATU, allowing no runs off six hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

The two squads conclude the four-game series with a double-header on Sunday (3/27) starting at 1 p.m.
