SUNS FINISH OFF BLOSSOMS FOR GSC SWEEP

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team was defeated twice on Sunday by final scores of 7-3 and 12-6 to give Arkansas Tech a four-game Gulf South Conference sweep.

Arkansas Tech (16-11, 7-1 GSC) becomes the first team ever to sweep the Cotton Blossoms (26-6, 7-5 GSC) in a four-game conference series in Monticello, and the first team to sweep four games from UAM in Monticello since 1996, the program’s first year of existence.

In the first game, ATU jumped out to a quick lead on a three-run homerun by Hayley Hudson in the top of the first inning. UAM answered in the bottom half of the frame on a bases-loaded walk by junior Jennifer Hickman.

The Golden Suns went up 7-1 with two runs in the third, one in the fourth and one in the fifth. A throwing error by UAM centerfielder Beth Johnson and an RBI single from Natalie Magie were the run-producers in the third. In the fourth, ATU’s Maddie Rancketto collected an RBI groundout, while Hudson hit her second homerun of the game with a solo shot in the fifth.

Senior Sarah Hayslip hit a solo homerun in the fourth, while junior Kayla Jackson was walked with the bases loaded in the fifth to finalize the scoring.

Jackson (14-3) took the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) off six hits with one strikeout and one walk in her complete-game outing. Shelby Jo Fenter (6-5) earned the win for ATU, while teammate Alex Doyle earned her first save of the year.

In the second game, the Golden Suns struck early again, this time a five-run first inning, highlighted by a two-run homerun by Shanda Jimeson. ATU added four more runs in the second with four consecutive hits, the big blow coming on a two-run homerun by Tiphani Moon.

UAM answered in the bottom of the second with a solo homerun by sophomore Faith Lund.

Both teams scored a run in the third inning to put UAM down 10-2, and both squads scored their final runs in the fourth inning. ATU scored two in the top of the fourth, while UAM scored four unearned runs, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Hayslip.

Rodgers (3-0) earned the win in relief, while Lund (3-1) took the loss.

The Cotton Blossoms have a week off before traveling to Decatur, Ala. for the GSC Crossover April 7-10.
