BLOSSOMS SQUEEZE BY HSU TO COMPLETE 4-GAME SWEEP

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team won a pair of close games over Henderson State on Sunday by final scores of 3-2 and 4-2 to complete a four-game Gulf South Conference sweep.

In the first game, the Cotton Blossoms (33-10, 13-9 GSC) got on the board first with an RBI double from sophomore Faith Lund in the bottom of the first inning to score junior Jennifer Hickman, who doubled earlier in the frame.

UAM took advantage of an HSU error in the third to take a 2-0 lead. Hickman and junior Kayla Jackson started the inning with back-to-back walks, and then HSU shortstop Kali Warren made an errant throw trying to get Jackson out at second on the next play. Hickman scored on the error.

The Cotton Blossoms added their final run in the sixth on an RBI groundout by freshman Summer Huddleston to score freshman Beth Johnson, who tripled to right center earlier in the inning.

The Lady Reddies (17-31, 10-16 GSC) made it a one-run game in the top of the seventh with a two-run homerun from Amber Wilburn with two outs. HSU’s Miranda Vest popped out to Hickman at shortstop to end the game.

Jackson (18-5) earned the win in complete-game style, allowing only two hits with four strikeouts and no walks. The Hallsville, Texas native threw five perfect innings. HSU’s Amber Wilburn (1-4) took the loss.

In the second game, the Lady Reddies started the scoring with an RBI double from Katie Gorsage in the top of the first.

For the next four innings, UAM starter Amanda Nordberg kept HSU scoreless, while UAM tied the score at 1-all in the bottom of the fourth in the form of Kayla Jackson, who scored on a fielder’s choice from Johnson.

Then in the bottom of the fifth, UAM plated three runs to take a 4-1 lead. The big blow of the inning came from Hickman, who doubled down the left field line to drive two runs across the plate. Senior Sarah Hayslip drove in Hickman two batters later with an RBI double to left-center.

The Lady Reddies responded with another late-inning homerun, this time a solo-shot from Miranda Vest in the sixth for the final score of the contest.

In the seventh, the Lady Reddies loaded the bases with two outs, prompting head coach Alvy Early to bring in Jackson to face HSU’s Katie Gorsage, who flied out to right field to end the game.

Nordberg (7-3) earned the win after allowing two runs off nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks in 6.2 innings of work. Jackson earned her first save of the season. HSU’s Melissa Decker (9-13) took the loss.

The Cotton Blossoms return to action this upcoming Thursday and Friday, April 21-22, in Arkadelphia, Ark. for a four-game GSC series against Ouachita Baptist. The two squads will play double-headers each day starting at 1 p.m.
