BLOSSOMS, LADY TIGERS EXCHANGE SHUTOUTS

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team and Ouachita Baptist split a Gulf South Conference double-header on Friday, both by way of shutout. The Cotton Blossoms won the first game 8-0, followed by a 2-0 win for the Lady Tigers.

In the first game, UAM (34-11, 14-10 GSC) started the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning in consecutive at bats – an RBI single from junior Randa Perry and a bases-loaded walk from freshman Beth Johnson.

UAM took advantage of an OBU (19-19, 14-9 GSC) error in the second to plate a pair of runs to take a 4-0 lead. Sophomore Faith Lund had an RBI double in the inning, and freshman Brittany Eitel scored on an error committed by the OBU second baseman. Eitel started the inning with a line-drive single that hit the base of the centerfield fence in the air.

UAM added two more runs in the fifth on one swing, a two-run single from senior Sarah Hayslip.

The Cotton Blossoms added their final two runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by junior Kayla Jackson and an RBI single from Johnson for her second run-producing at bat of the game.

For the game, UAM had 14 hits, but more importantly, held the Lady Tigers to just one.

Jackson (19-5) faced only 23 batters in her one-hit shutout, just two batters more than the minimum. The Hallsville, Texas native struck out three in the win and did not walk a batter. It is her eight shutout of the season and the 30th of her three-year collegiate career. OBU’s Kristen Rigsbee (7-10) took the loss.

In the second game, UAM was held to a total of four hits, three coming from junior Katie Bowman and the other from freshman Taylor Russell in a pinch-hit at bat in the top of the seventh.

The Lady Tigers scored their first run in the bottom of the first in the form of Megan Askew, who doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch.

The other OBU score came on a solo homerun from Bailey Sanders in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Despite taking the loss, junior Amanda Nordberg (7-4) tied her career-high with 10 strikeouts, including five straight over the third and fourth innings. Sanders’ homerun interrupted the streak. OBU’s Rayn House (8-4) earned the complete-game shutout victory.

The two squads are back in action on Saturday (4/23) with another GSC double-header starting at 1 p.m. at Sully Anderson Field in Arkadelphia.
