ANOTHER SPLIT DECISION FOR BLOSSOMS

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team and Ouachita Baptist split a pair of Gulf South Conference games on Saturday to even the four-game series. UAM won the first game 2-1 and OBU took the second game 5-2.

In the first game, Cotton Blossoms (35-12, 15-11 GSC) found themselves in a hole early, as the Lady Tigers (20-20, 14-10 GSC) plated an unearned run in the bottom of the first in the form of Megan Askew, who reached on a throwing error to lead off the inning.

UAM tied it up in the fourth on a solo homerun from junior Kayla Jackson, and took the final lead later in the inning on an RBI sacrifice bunt from freshman Beth Johnson.

Jackson (20-5) earned the win in complete-game fashion after allowing only one run, which was unearned, off of six hits with a pair of strikeouts and one walk. OBU’s Kristen Rigsbee (7-11) took the loss.

In the second game, the Lady Tigers struck early again with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first. From that point, UAM pitchers held OBU to only three more hits, but all three were solo homeruns. OBU pitcher Rayn House helped her own cause with homers in the second and fourth innings. Bailey Sanders also had a solo homerun in the fourth, her second of the series.

UAM’s only scoring came on consecutive RBI singles in the top of the fifth from Jackson and sophomore Faith Lund. The Cotton Blossoms loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with one out, but Lund grounded into a 5-3 double play to end the game.

Junior Amanda Nordberg (7-5) took the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) off four hits with six strikeouts and no walks in the first three innings. House (9-4) earned the complete-game victory for OBU.

The Cotton Blossoms close out the regular season next weekend at home against Delta State with double-headers on Saturday (4/30) and Sunday (5/1) at 1 p.m. each day. Saturday is “Senior Day” for the UAM Softball team. There will be a special ceremony honoring the program’s three seniors at approximately 12:40 p.m. on Saturday.
