BLOSSOMS HOLD OFF DELTA IN DOUBLE-HEADER SWEEP

MONTICELLO
– The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team used six extra base hits on Thursday to capture 3-1 and 8-3 wins over Delta State at home to kickoff the final series of the regular season.

In the first game, the Cotton Blossoms (37-12, 17-11 GSC) trailed early as the Lady Statesmen (20-30, 11-17 GSC) plated a run in the top of the first on a delayed steal of home by Lauren Lewis, who lead off with a single, moved to second on a bunt-single and moved to third on a fielder’s choice.

That would be the only run DSU would score in the contest, as junior starter Kayla Jackson only allowed the Lady Statesmen to reach scoring position once more over the final six innings.

UAM scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the third on three consecutive run-producing at bats. Senior Sarah Hayslip started the rally with an RBI double, followed by an RBI single from sophomore Faith Lund. Junior Randa Perry drove in the final run on a squeeze bunt, scoring Hayslip from third.

Jackson (21-5) captured the win in complete-game style, allowing one run off five hits with no strikeouts and no walks. She tossed three perfect innings and only faced four batters more than the minimum. DSU’s Victoria Combs (10-12) took the loss.

In the second game, Hayslip led the Cotton Blossoms offensively going 3-for-4. She lacked a homerun to complete the cycle. The Houston, Texas native had a two-run triple in the third, a double in the fifth and an RBI single in the sixth.

In addition to Hayslip’s two-run triple in the third, Perry had an RBI double to give UAM a 3-0 lead.

UAM took advantage of a pair of DSU errors in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. Junior Katie Bowman had an RBI double in the rally, and was driven in on an RBI single from junior Laura Tucker in the next at bat. Bowman collected her only doubles of the season on Thursday. She also had one in the first game.

Freshman Beth Johnson was responsible for UAM’s run in the fifth with a squeeze bunt to score Hayslip, who doubled earlier in the inning.

The Lady Statesmen reached the scoreboard in the sixth on a two-run homerun from Emily Todd.

UAM added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI groundout from Jackson and Hayslip’s RBI single.

DSU scored an unearned run in top of the seventh to finalize the scoring.

Junior Amanda Nordberg (8-5) earned the win in complete-game fashion after allowing three runs (two earned) off four hits with eight strikeouts and three walks. DSU’s Brittany Gonzales (7-17) took the loss.

The two squads conclude the four-game series on Friday with a double-header starting at noon.
