REGULAR SEASON ENDS WITH SWEEP, BLOSSOMS FINISH OFF LADY STATESMEN

MONTICELLO
– The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team concluded the regular season by completing a four-game sweep of Delta State with 5-1 and 5-2 wins on Friday.

The Cotton Blossoms (39-12, 19-11 Gulf South Conference) now await results from the rest of the GSC-West to determine the team’s seed in the upcoming conference championship tournament to be held May 6-8 in Southaven, Miss.

In Friday’s first game against the Lady Statesmen (20-32, 11-19 GSC), UAM reached the scoreboard first with a three run second inning, highlighted by a two-run double from junior Jennifer Hickman. Junior Randa Perry was responsible for the other run in the frame with an RBI single up the middle.

DSU scored its lone run on one swing, a solo homerun from Marissa Sanders in the top of the sixth to cut UAM’s lead to 3-1.

The Cotton Blossoms capped the game’s scoring with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on consecutive RBI singles to left field from freshmen Beth Johnson and Summer Huddleston.

Junior Kayla Jackson (22-5) went 1-for-3 at the plate and also recorded a complete-game victory. The Hallsville, Texas native gave up one run off four hits, while striking out four and walking only one batter. DSU’s Victoria Combs (10-13) took the loss.

In the second game, DSU held a 2-1 lead after two and a half innings, all three runs scored due to errors.

UAM took advantage of a pair of DSU miscues in the second inning to reach the scoreboard first in the form of Hickman, who reached on a fielding error by the DSU third baseman and moved to second on an errant pickoff throw by the catcher. She was later driven in on a single from Huddleston.

DSU answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third with the help of a throwing error by UAM third baseman Kendra White.

In the bottom half of the third, UAM created a 2-all tie with a bases-loaded walk from Huddleston to score senior Sarah Hayslip, who singled earlier in the inning.

Two of UAM’s final three runs crossed the plate on stolen bases. Hickman led off the fifth with a double, moved to third on a bunt single by Johnson, and scored on a double-steal.

In the sixth, Hayslip had a hand in both of UAM’s final runs. The Houston, Texas native smashed an RBI triple to right center, and then stole home after catching the DSU defense not paying attention.

Perry (6-1) earned the win in relief after holding the Lady Statesmen scoreless on only one hit in the final three innings. Junior starter Amanda Nordberg only allowed one hit as well in her four innings of work. DSU’s Brittany Gonzales (7-18) took the loss.
