BLOSSOMS DROP A PAIR ON DAY 2 OF CROSSOVER

DECATUR, Ala. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team lost a pair of games on the second day of the Gulf South Conference Crossover with a 4-1 setback to West Alabama followed by a 2-0 loss to nationally top-ranked Alabama-Huntsville.

In the first game of the day, West Alabama (24-12, 4-10 GSC) took advantage of a pair of walks to score four runs in the bottom of the first inning to produce its only scoring of the game.

Junior Amanda Nordberg (5-3) took the loss, but kept the Lady Tigers out of scoring position for the remainder of the contest. Nordberg’s final line read four runs allowed off four hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.

UAM’s lone run of the contest came in the form of junior Jennifer Hickman, who crossed the plate in the top of the second inning due to a throwing error by the UWA shortstop.

UWA winner Kristen Skinner (11-4) tossed four perfect innings against the Cotton Blossoms (27-8, 8-7 GSC) and allowed only three hits and struck out four in her complete-game victory.

In the second game, UAM and UAH each had five hits, but UAM’s two errors were enough to allow the Chargers (31-1-1, 15-0 GSC) to score a run in the second inning and their final run in the fourth.

Junior Kayla Jackson (15-4) took the loss for UAM after allowing two runs off five hits with two strikeouts and no walks in a complete-game outing. UAH’s Whitney Toler (13-0) earned the win and Alex Lewis earned her ninth save of the season.

The Cotton Blossoms return to action in the crossover on Saturday (4/9) against No. 5 Valdosta State at noon and against Lambuth at 4 p.m.
