BLOSSOMS UPSET TOP-RANKED CHARGERS

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team concluded the opening day of the Gulf South Conference Championship with a 2-0 record due to a 3-1 upset-victory over nationally top-ranked Alabama-Huntsville on Friday at the Greenbrook Complex.

The Cotton Blossoms defeated West Alabama 1-0 earlier on Friday.

In the win over UAH, both squads exchanged runs in the first with the Chargers (39-3-1) striking first on an RBI single from Stephanie Needham, while the Cotton Blossoms (41-12) answered with an RBI double from junior Kayla Jackson.

From that point, Jackson (24-5), who earned her second victory of the day, only allowed the Chargers to reach scoring position once more. The GSC-West Player and Pitcher of the Year allowed one run off six hits with a pair of strikeouts and one walk.

Another RBI double to right center gave UAM a 2-1 lead in the third, this time off the bat of senior Sarah Hayslip to score junior Katie Bowman, who singled and advanced to second on junior Jennifer Hickman’s second sacrifice bunt of the game.

Hayslip also had a hand in the final run of the game. The Houston, Texas native led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a triple to right center and later scored on an RBI double from junior Randa Perry.

The Cotton Blossoms are set to face No. 4 Valdosta State on Saturday (5/7) at 11 a.m. in the winner’s bracket. Despite the outcome of that game, UAM will play again at 1:30 on Saturday. The second opponent of the day has not been determined. The UAM Sports Network will provide live play-by-play coverage at KHBM 93.7 in Monticello and online at uamsports.com.
