MEMPHIS – The Arkansas-Monticello volleyball team went 1-1 in the opening round of the 2011 CBU Invitational.
Stats for the Blossoms’ opening game against the West Georgia Wolves are not yet posted, but should be available soon.
The Wolves (0-2) took game one 25-19 before the Blossoms (1-2) could get their feet under them. They came storming back in game two, evening the match with a 25-15 win.
West Georgia took game three 25-22, but the Blossoms rallied in games four and five to get their first win of the season, 25-16 and 15-9. The win is the first for Head Coach Casey Shingler.
After taking the five-game win from the Wolves the Blossoms turned right around and took on tournament host Christian Brothers. The Lady Bucs (2-0) were able to watch UAM’s bout with West Georgia from the stands of Canale Arena after winning the 9:00 A.M. match over Montevallo.
So, rested and playing on home hardwood, the Lady Bucs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead winning game one 25-17 and game two 25-18. The Blossoms did not quit taking an early lead in game three, but they ran out of gas late and allowed CBU to come from behind for the extra-points win in game three 27-25 to take the match 3-0.
UAM has two more matches today before returning to Arkansas. They face another former GSC foe in West Alabama at 11:00 A.M. before closing out the Invitational with Bellarmine University out of Louisville at 3:00 P.M.
