MONTICELLO –
The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team begins the postseason portion of the 2012 schedule this Thursday, November 15 against Arkansas Tech in the opening round of the Great American Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament.

The Cotton Blossoms enter the single-elimination event as the No. 7 seed after posting an overall record of 11-23 and a 4-10 mark in GAC matches throughout the 2012 season.

UAM’s first round opponent is No. 2 seed Arkansas Tech, which posted a 25-9 overall record and an 11-3 GAC record in the 2012 regular season. Arkansas Tech defeated UAM three times this year, including a 3-0 non-conference win in Russellville on September 7, a 3-1 GAC win in Monticello on September 11 and a 3-0 GAC sweep of UAM in Russellville on October 23.

First-year UAM head coach Peter Cruz visited with uamsports.com on Wednesday to discuss his team’s All-GAC selections as well as the upcoming GAC championship tournament. To view the full interview, visit the following link: http://youtu.be/PrMqN5FdoXQ.

UAM will face ATU in the first round of the GAC tournament for the second straight season. ATU, which hosted the 2011 GAC tournament as the regular season champion, defeated UAM 3-0 in last year’s event on its way to the tournament championship.

ATU holds a 14-4 all-time series advantage against UAM, including eight straight victories over the Cotton Blossoms since the beginning of the 2010 season. UAM defeated ATU twice during the 2009 season for the last victories over the Golden Suns.

A victory over Arkansas Tech on Thursday would place UAM into the semifinals against either No. 3 seed Southern Arkansas or No. 6 seed East Central. SAU and ECU open the tournament at noon on Thursday. The bottom half of the bracket includes No. 1 seed Harding taking on No. 8 seed Southeastern Oklahoma State at 5 p.m. on Thursday and No. 4 seed Southwestern Oklahoma State taking on No. 5 seed Ouachita Baptist at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday’s opening round match against Arkansas Tech will be covered live on the UAM Sports Network at KHBM-FM 93.7 in Monticello and online at uamsports.com through the following link: http://uamsports.com/sports/2010/10/18/listenlive.aspx?tab=liveaudio.
