ATU POWERS PAST UAM IN GAC TOURNAMENT

The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team saw its 2012 season come to a close with a 3-0 loss to Arkansas Tech on Thursday in the opening round of the Great American Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament at Harding University’s Rhodes Fieldhouse.

Final game scores were 25-13, 25-5 and 25-20. With the loss, UAM finishes the season with an 11-24 overall record, while ATU improves to 26-9 overall and advances to the tournament semifinals against Southern Arkansas on Friday.

The Golden Suns closed out the first set on a 10-1 scoring, before cruising to a 15-point victory in the second set. In that second set, ATU scored 15 consecutive points on the serve of junior Amber Cerillos, who ended the match with seven service aces.

UAM stayed within three points for most of the third and final set to avoid any ATU runs. The Cotton Blossoms posted their best percentage of the match in the final set with 12 kills on 40 attempts with six errors for a .150 clip.

For the match, UAM totaled 22 kills on 92 attempts with 23 errors for a -.011 percentage. The Golden Suns tallied 42 kills on 87 attempts with just eight errors for a .391 percentage.

Senior Amy Kleypas led UAM individually with seven kills and 13 digs in her final match as a Cotton Blossom. Holly Schweigert and Christina Rini chipped in with five kills each.

Kaitlyn White led the Golden Suns with 14 kills on 25 attempts with just one error for a .520 percentage.
