FARMER BREAKS 1000 POINTS AS WEEVILS TAKE MULERIDERS IN OVERTIME

Box Score MONTICELLO, Ark. -  UAM senior guard L.A. Farmer scored his 1,022 career point tonight in the Weevils’ 71-68 overtime win over Southern Arkansas.

The Weevils (18-8, 8-6 GAC) and the Muleriders (12-14, 5-9 GAC) went back-and-forth all night long with neither team able to get larger than a 10-point lead all game. The contest saw nine tied scores and eight separate lead changes, including two ties and three lead changes in the overtime period alone.

The three’s were falling early on, as nine of the first ten buckets scored were from beyond the arc. L.A. Farmer scored his 1000th point in a Weevil uniform on the third possession with a trey at the top of the key.

The Weevils got their highest lead of the night with 12:13 remaining in the first half after a mini 5-0 run to go up 20-11. The Muleriders closed the gap and retied the score at 22 with 7:40 remaining. The score tied again at 25 and at 30 before SAU closed the half on a micro-run of their own to take a 37-32 advantage into the break.

Their lead climbed as high as ten at the start of the second half, opening the frame on a 5-0 run, 42-32. This time it was the Weevils’ turn to climb back into the game pulling within one twice, at 47-48 and 51-52 before reclaiming the lead, 53-52, on a Farmer layup with 8:14 left to play.

Neither team could get any distance and regulation ended in a 62-62 tie, the sixth of the game. The overtime period was also close, but turned quickly into the Kori Forge show. The junior out of Atlanta scored eight of his 15 points in the five minutes of the overtime period, all but two of UAM’s points in the frame. L.A. Farmer added two free throws to get the Weevils to the final 71 points.

Farmer led all scorers on the night with 25 points off 10-16 shooting, including 2-of-3 from deep and a perfect 3-for-3 from the line. Forge finished behind him with his 15 in 37 minutes and Sergio Crowe ended the night with 14 points on his line. SAU was paced by Chase Spruiell’s 16 points in 44 minutes.

UAM held a 10-point advantage in the paint tonight, 36 to 26, but gave it all back plus one in turnover points, 23 to 12. Both teams pulled in 30 boards apiece in the evenly matched game. UAM shot slightly better from the floor, going 26-of-48 (54-percent) including 7-of-13 (53-percent) from three. SAU shot 42-percent from the field and 33-percent from three. UAM hit 12-of-20 free throw attempts while the Muleriders went 5-of-7 from the line.

UAM’s three seniors, Sergio Crowe, Ricardo Hall, and L.A. Farmer, will play their final game in Steelman Field House this Thursday as the Weevils host the Harding University Bison in a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
