Game 1 | Game 2
MONTICELLO, Ark. – The UAM softball team got a pair of wins in non-conference play this afternoon over Texas A&M International, 8-2 and 7-3.
UAM (13-9) used two five-run innings, one in each game, to sweep the series from the Dustdevils (7-21).
In game one it came in the bottom of the fifth. Maggie Sands led the inning with a walk and Beth Johnson moved her to second with a successful bunt down to third. Sara Matthews drove in Sands in the next at-bat with a single right on the left field line that stayed fair. Kayla Jackson scorched a double to left scoring both Johnson and Matthews. Then, with Jackson on third Taylor Russell launched the ball deep over the left field fence to give UAM the commanding 6-2 lead.
The Blossoms tacked on two more in the sixth as insurance, but Jackson shut A&M down the rest of the way, allowing just two runs on five hits in the complete game win. The senior from Hallsville, Texas would also get the win in the second game, in relief for Katie Slaughter.
The runs came quicker in game two, after getting two runs in the second off a Summer Huddleston single and a TAMIU error. The five-run inning came in the third to put the Blossoms firmly in the driver’s seat. Sara Matthews got a one-out solo homerun to left to start things off. Then, with two outs Taylor Russell started a five-hit rally. Jennifer Hickman and Brittany Eitel both homered to left and Katie Bowman drove in the final run of the inning with a double to left center.
From there Jackson shut the Dustdevils down, holding TAMIU scoreless in their final four at-bats.
The Blossoms will return to action this weekend with a GAC doubleheader at Southern Arkansas. First pitch with the Lady Riders is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.
