BLOSSOMS SPLIT WITH SAU

Game 1 | Game 2

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The UAM softball team went 1-1 today in Magnolia, taking game one from SAU 6-1 before falling in game two 1-2.

The Lady Riders (11-19,4-10 GAC) jumped out in the first with a solo homer to center to go up 1-0 before UAM (14-10,2-2 GAC)answered in fourth. Kayla Jackson got things started with a single to right center. She was driven in two batters later by Jennifer Hickman’s double to left. Katie Bowman kept things going with a single back up the middle, scoring Hickman. Beth Johnson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate the inning’s third run. Sara Matthews drove in the fourth and fifth run with another double to left center that scored Summer Huddleston and Bowman before SAU could get out of the frame.

UAM added to the 5-1 lead in the sixth as Maggie Sands got a leadoff triple to center, setting up Beth Johnson for the RBI with a single up the middle on the next at-bat. Kayla Jackson got win in the complete game for the Blossoms. The senior allowed the one SAU run on two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Jennifer Hickman provided the only offensive spark of the second game, again in the fourth inning, with a solo homerun to center. Unfortunately, the Lady Riders would answer in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run inning off two hits and a Blossom error to take their first lead of the day. The Blossom attempt to regain the lead in the seventh fell short, as UAM went 1-2-3 in the frame to end the game 1-2.

Katie Slaughter took the loss in six innings of work for UAM. The freshman gave up the two runs on four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.

The two teams will face off again tomorrow in the second doubleheader. Game time is slated for 11 a.m.
