ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The UAM softball team completed the four-game sweep of Ouachita Baptist today, winning 8-1 in game three and 4-0 in game four.
The Blossoms (24-10, 12-2 GAC) never trailed in either game today to close out the series with two more wins. The scoring got underway in the first inning of game one. A fielding error by OBU (14-23, 4-14 GAC) allowed Beth Johnson to score, followed by a sac fly to center from Taylor Russell that scored Sara Matthews.
The Lady Tigers got one run back in the bottom of the first, but UAM broke the game open with two homeruns in the third inning. Johnson led off with a solo shot to left before Jennifer Hickman cleaned up with two on for a four-run inning, putting UAM in the driver’s seat for the remainder of the game.
The Blossoms picked up two more long balls before the end of the game, Kayla Jackson got one in the fifth and Presley Long finished the Blossoms’ scoring in the sixth with UAM’s fourth homerun of the game.
Kayla Jackson got the complete-game win in seven innings of work, allowing the one OBU run on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
UAM bookended game two with three runs in the first and one run in the seventh to secure the four-game sweep of the Lady Tigers. Kayla Jackson got her second homerun of the day with a three-run blast in the first, scoring Katie Bowman, Beth Johnson, and herself.
She then put an exclamation point on the day with her third round-tripper of the afternoon in a solo shot in the top of the seventh. Katie Slaughter picked up the complete-game win with seven innings of three-hit pitching. She struck out six while walking none in the 24 batters faced.
The Blossoms will return to Monticello on Tuesday afternoon to host former GSC rival Delta State in an afternoon doubleheader at Blossoms Field. First pitch with the Lady Statesmen is scheduled for 2 p.m.
