MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team heads to Hot Springs, Arkansas today in preparation for the2013 Great American Conference Championship Tournament that begins on Thursday, November 21.
The Cotton Blossoms enter the eight-team single-elimination tournament as the No. 8 seed and will face off against GAC regular season champion Harding in the first round on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Summit Arena attached to the Hot Springs Convention Center. All eight teams are meeting tonight for a welcome banquet, which will also feature the revelation of the 2013 all-conference teams and yearly award winners. Prior to the welcome banquet, the GAC is sponsoring a youth clinic conducted by representatives from all eight teams.
UAM finished the season with a 12-19 overall record and a 2-12 mark in GAC contests. The Lady Bisons enter the event with a 25-7 overall record and an undefeated 14-0 record in GAC matches. In the home and away meetings between HU and UAM this season, the Lady Bisons recorded three-game sweeps in each contest, including the regular season finale in Monticello last Thursday night.
The 2013 tournament opens up on Thursday at noon with No. 3 seed East Central taking on No. 6 seed Southeastern Oklahoma State. At 2:30 p.m., No. 2 seed Arkansas Tech faces No. 7 seed Southern Arkansas. Following the UAM-HU match at 5 p.m., No. 4 seed Ouachita Baptist and No. 5 seed Southwestern Oklahoma State close the first round at 7:30 p.m.
Friday's semi final matches are set for 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. The championship match is slated for Saturday at 2 p.m.
