MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team was held to a 35 shooting performance in a 74-65 loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State at home on Thursday night in the first Great American Conference game of the season
After leading the majority of the first 14 minutes of the first half, the Weevils (2-2, 0-1 GAC) were outscored 13-4 in the final six minutes of the period, including a three-pointer from SWOSU's Trent Washington with four seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs a 36-30 lead at halftime.
The Bulldogs (2-2, 1-0 GAC) carried over their first half momentum into thefirst four minutes of the second half, using a 10-2 run to start the half capped by another trey from Washington to give the Bulldogs a 48-32 lead with 16:20 remaining.
SWOSU maintained its double-digit lead until the Weevils put together a 7-1scoring run starting with six minutes remaining to trim the lead to seven points at 63-56 with 3:29 left in the game. All seven points came from senior Brandon Wilson, who started the run with a fast-break dunk and ended it with a layup after blocking a shot on the other end.
The Bulldogs made five free throws down the stretch to end UAM's hopes of a comeback.
UAM finished the game shooting 35 percent from the field (21-for-60), 32 percent on three-pointers (7-for-22) and 76 percent on foul shots (16-for-21). The Bulldogs ended the game at 40 percent from the field (24-for-60), 37 percent on three-pointers (7-for-19) and 73 percent on foul shots (19-for-26).
The Weevils ended the game with a 45-35 edge in rebounding, but trailed in the turnover category 14-9.
Senior Brandon Sims led UAM in scoring with 19 points on a 6-for-13 shooting performance, including a 4-for-5 night beyond the arc. Wilson finished with his first career UAM double-double at 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with his three blocked shots. Senior Jared Harrison also reached double-digits in scoring at 10 points and led all players with six assists. Junior D'Audrio Patton added nine points and five rebounds in his 13 minutes off the bench.
Rod Camphor led the Bulldogs with a game-high 21 points. Washington finished with 19.
The Weevils are back in action on Saturday, November 23 at home against Northwestern Oklahoma State. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
