NATCHITOCHES, Louisiana – Northwestern State took advantage of nearly 30 more free throw attempts than the University of Arkansas at Monticello women's basketball team in a 61-56 come-from-behind win over the Blossoms on Wednesday night inside Prather Coliseum.
It was UAM's final exhibition contest of the season. The win counts for Northwestern State, improving the Lady Demons to 5-4 on the season.
The Lady Demons finished the game 22-for-32 at the foul line, including a 17-for-22 effort in the second half. After never trailing in the first half, the Blossoms were whistled for 10 fouls in the first 10 minutes of the second half, resulting in nine points for Northwestern. Those free throws sparked a 16-3 run for the Lady Demons and resulted in the first lead change of the game with NSU holding a 44-38 advantage with 8:47 remaining.
After trailing for the first time in the game, UAM responded by outscoring NSU 18-9 over the next seven minutes to hold a three-point lead of 56-53 with 1:43 remaining. However, the Lady Demons closed out the contest scoring eight unanswered points, six coming from the free-throw line.
The Blossoms only went to the foul line four times in the loss. Junior Jordan Goforth accounted for all of those attempts, going 3-for-4.
Juniors Nikki Mullen and Nelsha Peterson tied for the game-high in scoring with 15 points each. All of Mullen's points came from three-point range, sinking 5-of-10 treys. Goforth also finished in double-figures with 10 points, while also tallying a game-high eight rebounds and seven assists.
Northwestern State placed four scorers in double-figures, led by Janelle Perez with 13 points, highlighted by a 10-for-10 performance on foul shots. Keisha Lee and Chelsea Rodgers each added 12 points in the contest.
The Blossoms wrap up the 2014 portion of the schedule this Saturday at home against Philander Smith. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Steelman Field House.
