WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team recorded the series victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday on the road, but split the double header with an 11-6 win the first game and a 4-1 loss in the second game.
UAM (10-5, 3-1 Great American Conference) scored its runs in bunches in the first game en route to securing the series victory. UAM scored one run in the second, four runs in the third, one run in the fourth and five runs in the seventh.
Senior Brittany Eitel opened the scoring with a solo homerun in the second inning and added four in the third, highlighted by three straight run producing at bats – an RBI single from sophomore Kali Piha, an RBI triple from senior Beth Johnson and an RBI double from Eitel.
Piha gave UAM a 6-0 lead in the fourth with an RBI double to score sophomore Taylor Norris, who singled earlier in the inning.
SWOSU rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fifth off four hits and a pair of UAM errors. The Blossoms answered with a five-run rally of their own in the top of the seventh, headlined by a three-run homerun from junior Sara Matthews and an RBI double from senior Channing Tharpe.
Senior Courtney Wilson (5-2) earned the win after allowing four runs off 10 hits in the first 4.2 innings. Mallory Davis (0-4) took the loss for SWOSU after giving up five runs off four hits in the first three innings.
In the second game, SWOSU rallied for three runs in the bottom of the third inning off three hits and one UAM error, and added its final run in the fifth on an RBI double from Adrienne Martinez.
Junior Lacy Blanchard ended the shutout bid with a solo homerun in the top of the seventh for UAM's lone run of the game. UAM was held to four hits in the game.Â
Junior Katie Slaughter (5-3) took the loss in complete-game fashion, giving up four runs (one earned) off seven hits in six innings of work. Julianne Martinez (3-3) earned the win for SWOSU, also in complete game style, giving up only one run off four hits.
The Blossoms are back in action next Saturday and Sunday (March 1-2) on the road against Henderson State with double headers each day starting at 1 p.m. at Dee White Field.
