MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team wrapped up a 10-game home stand by recording a double-header sweep over Delta State on Wednesday, winning the first game 3-2 before posting a 5-4 11-inning victory in game two.
Senior Beth Johnson's solo homerun to right center in the bottom of the third inning of the first game held on to be the game winner before senior teammate Brittany Eitel ended the second game with a solo shot to left center on the first pitch in the bottom of the 11th inning.
In the first game, UAM (18-11) answered Delta State's two runs in the top of the second inning with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame on a two-run, two-out single from senior Hannah Pendley.
In the second half of the twin bill, the Lady Statesmen (13-16) put four on the board in the top of the third inning, highlighted by a three-run shot to right from Kaitlin Moore.
UAM cut the deficit to just one run with three runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run double to center from freshman McKenzie Rice. Sophomore Taylor Norris singled in a run earlier in the inning for UAM's first score.
Sophomore Kali Piha forced a 4-all tie in the fifth on a solo homerun to left center.
Senior Courtney Wilson (10-4) earned the win in the first game after allowing two unearned runs off seven hits with a pair of strikeouts and one walk in her complete-game effort. Junior Katie Slaughter (9-5) tossed all 11 innings in the second game, giving up four runs off 11 hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
The Blossoms are back in action this weekend on the road in four-game Great American Conference series against Harding. The series starts with a double-header on Friday at 1 p.m. in Searcy.
