SEARCY, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team used five-run inning to defeat Harding 7-1 in the second game of a double header split with the Lady Bisons on Saturday in Searcy. Harding won the first game 4-3 to win the series three games to one.
Sophomore Kali Piha sparked UAM's offense with a grand slam homerun as a part of a five-run fifth inning in the second game. Freshman McKenzie Rice started the rally with an RBI single earlier in the inning.
Harding opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly out from Brookelynn Moon. The Blossoms took advantage of a Harding error to tie the score at 1-all in the top of the second inning.
Junior Sydney Tipton finalized the scoring in the second game with an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning.
Junior Katie Slaughter (9-7) earned the complete-game victory, giving up just one run off nine hits with five strikeouts and no walks in her seven innings in the circle. Danielle Hubbard (7-8) took the loss for HU after giving up six runs off 10 hits with five strikeouts and no walks in the first four innings.
Senior Beth Johnson and Piha started the scoring in the first game with back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the third inning. Harding answered with a run in the third and took the lead for the first time with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by an RBI double down the right field line by Madison Wickline.
Johnson brought the Blossoms back to even with the Lady Bisons in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single to center field to score senior Hannah Pendley, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.
Harding's Kimmy Hendricks drove in the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice.
Senior Courtney Wilson (10-6) took the loss after giving up four runs off 12 hits in a complete-game effort. Amber Rollins (10-6) earned the complete-game victory for Harding, giving up three runs off eight hits in seven innings of work.
