MONTICELLO –
In its first home games since the first day of February, the University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team snapped a five-game losing skid with a pair of shutout victories of Ouachita Baptist on Saturday, winning the first game 5-0 and the second game 8-0 in five innings.

In the first game, junior hurler Katie Slaughter (6-4) allowed two hits with four strikeouts and one walk in her seven-innings of work, marking her second shutout victory of the season. In game two, senior Courtney Wilson (6-4) picked up her third shutout of the season and only allowed two hits as the Blossoms supported her with eight runs off 10 hits in the run-rule win.

In game one, the Blossoms (12-9, 5-5 Great American Conference) opened the scoring with a two-run single by senior Hannah Pendley in the bottom of the second before going to the long ball for the final three runs. Junior Lacy Blanchard went deep to right center in the fourth for a solo shot, followed the next inning by a two-run blast down the left field line by junior Sydney Tipton.

Tipton opened the scoring in the second game with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. UAM scored four in the second, highlighted by a three-run double by senior Beth Johnson.

The Blossoms finalized the scoring with three runs in the third on an RBI double from senior Channing Tharpe, an RBI single from junior Sara Matthews and a double steal that plated Tharpe from third base.

Abbi Frakes (4-4) took the loss for OBU (7-13, 3-7 GAC) in the first game, allowing five runs off eight hits in a complete-game effort. Shelby McWhorter (1-4) took the loss in the second game after giving up eight runs off nine hits in the first 2.1 innings.

The two squads wrap up the four-game series on Sunday with a double header starting at 1 p.m. at Blossoms Field.
