MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team opened its four-game Great American Conference against Southern Nazarene with a double-header split on Friday at home, falling in the first game 4-1 before picking a 4-0 win in the second game.
The Blossoms (24-22, 15-18 GAC) earned the split mostly due to a three-run homerun from freshman Korie Parker in the third inning of the second game. Senior Beth Johnson opened the scoring with an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning.
Junior Katie Slaughter (13-10) earned the complete-game shutout win, keeping the Crimson Storm (16-25, 10-18 GAC) off the board on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks in her seven innings in the circle.
In the series opener, UAM was limited to just three hits while also being struck out nine times by SNU starter Kayla Wyatt (10-9). The Blossoms scored their lone run off a wild pitch in the bottom of the third in the form of senior Channing Tharpe, who drew a walk earlier in the inning.
The Crimson Storm opened the scoring with an unearned run in the top of the first, and added two runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth.
Senior Courtney Wilson (10-10) took the loss in complete-game fashion, giving up four runs (three earned) off seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
The two squads wrap up the series on Saturday with a double-header starting at noon at Blossoms Field.
