MONTICELLO — The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team concluded the 2014 regular season with a pair of losses to Northwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday at home. NWOSU won the first game 4-2 and finalized the four-game sweep with a 3-2 win in the finale.
UAM (26-28, 16-23 Great American Conference) answered NWOSU's homerun in the top of the first inning with a pair of solo homeruns in the bottom of the first inning from sophomore Kali Piha and senior Beth Johnson to put the Blossoms up 2-1.
The Rangers (39-15, 27-11 GAC) answered in the top of the second inning with a solo homerun from Shyanne Nichols and used a UAM error to take a 3-2 lead.
The Rangers added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly from Megan Sanders.
Senior Courtney Wilson (11-13) took the loss after giving up four runs off eight hits in her complete-game effort. NWOSU's Shelby Anderson (20-7) earned the complete-game win after giving up two runs off four hits.
In the second game, the Rangers scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning and held UAM to just one run in the bottom of the inning to record the one-run win.
UAM got on the board first on a solo homerun from junior Lacy Blanchard in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Rangers' three runs in the seventh came on back-to-back doubles from Sara Wilson and Lindsay Thorstenson.
The Blossoms scored their final run in the seventh on an RBI double from senior Brittany Eitel.
UAM has earned the No. 7 seed in the GAC Championship Tournament to be played May 1-3 at the Tiger Athletic Complex in Bentonville, Arkansas. The Blossoms open up against No. 2 seed Southern Arkansas on Thursday, May 1 at noon.
