BLOSSOMS SPLIT AT SAU TRI-MATCH

MAGNOLIA, Ark. –
The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team split a pair of contests at a tri-match hosted by Southern Arkansas, falling to the host Muleriders 3-1 in the first match and securing a 3-0 sweep over Central Baptist in the nightcap.

Final game scores in the loss to SAU (2-11, 1-2 GAC) were 19-25, 18-25, 25-20 and 16-25. UAM hit .117 in the loss with 47 kills and 28 errors on 163 attempts. On the other side of the net, the Lady Muleriders posted a .266 hitting percentage with 51 kills and 14 errors on 139 attempts.

The Blossoms (4-5, 1-2 GAC) were led by a trio of players at the double-digit mark in kills. Freshman Aubrey Harrison, senior Tasha Evans and junior Sydni Schulz all had 10 kills each. Schulz recorded her second double-double of the season by also adding 12 digs.

Junior Lani Kaiwi paced the back-row with 18 digs. Junior Kaila Kikugawa and senior Jessica Cuba aided the UAM offense with 17 and 15 assists, respectively.

SAU also placed three players in double-digits in the kills category, led by Amanda Monge and Hailey McNee with 12 each.

In the second match of the day, all but one member of the 2014 roster saw action as the Blossoms swept Central Baptist in non-conference action by final game scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-20. UAM hit .193 as a team with 37 kills and 16 errors on 109 attempts. The Lady Mustangs (3-9) hit .060 as a team with 28 kills and 21 errors on 116 attempts.

Senior Jessica Cuba transitioned back to a hitter position and led all players in the match with 10 kills on 30 swings with only four errors. She finished one dig away from a double-double. After committing nine errors against SAU, Tasha Evans responded with nine kills and zero errors against CBC. Evans also chipped in with three total blocks to account for 11 points in the win.

Sophomore Brittney Beckham posted a career-high 28 assists in the victory, and also added eight digs. Freshman Aspen Luna also reached a career-high in the win over CBC with eight kills, while also adding nine digs.

The Blossoms are back in action this weekend at Steelman Field House, hosting East Central on Friday, September 26 at 6 p.m. and Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday at noon. Admission to both matches is free.
