SAN ANGELO, Texas – The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team opened the 2014 season on Friday morning with a three-set loss to Western New Mexico in the opening match of the Angelo State Kathleen Brasfield Invitational.
Final game scores were 25-11, 25-14 and 25-11. UAM plays again on Friday at 4 p.m. against Missouri Southern State.
The Mustangs scored more than a third of their total points off UAM's 29 attack errors. The Blossoms struggled with the attack throughout the match, posting negative hitting percentages in the first two sets before evening out to zero in the third and final set. WNMU finished the match with a .214 percentage, saving its best performance for the third set with 10 kills and only error.
Junior Sydni Schulz led the Blossoms in total points with four kills and one service ace. Seniors Jessica Cuba and Tasha Evans followed closely with 4.5 points each. Cuba posted four kills and one block. Evans turned in three kills and two blocks.
Schulz, freshman Aspen Luna and junior Kaila Kikugawa led the back row with nine digs each. Kikugawa also turned in a team-high seven assists.
Western New Mexico's Leeta Grap tallied a match-high 10 kills.
