MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team began a four-game home stand with a 92-75 non-conference victory over Central Baptist on Saturday inside Steelman Field House.
The Weevils (5-6) totaled a season-high 24 assists in the win, which led to five scorers reaching the double-digit mark. The 24 assists beats out the team's previous season-high of 23 in this past Thursday's road win over Southeastern.
UAM grabbed the lead from the opening tip and ran out to a 17-3 lead throughout the first five minutes. The Mustangs (4-7) fought back with an 11-1 scoring run over the next four minutes to trim their deficit to just four points at the 10:56 mark. Following a three-pointer from senior Sharif Hudson on UAM's next possession, the Weevils never held a lead less than seven points throughout the remainder of the game.
At halftime, UAM led 48-30 after closing out the period on a 12-0 run.
To start the second half, UAM went up by 20 points for the first time of the game on a dunk by Hudson with only nine seconds off the clock.
CBC managed to get back to within 11 points with 14:59 mark after using a 10-0 run over the previous three minutes. UAM cut off the CBC rally there and managed to get back to a 20-point lead at the 11:12 mark. The Weevils led by as much as 25 points in the second half.
Hudson led all players with a 18 points and 10 rebounds, his second double-double of the year. He also tied for the game-high in assists with seven. Junior Jamal Peterson scored 17 points, while racking up seven assists and a game-high five steals. Senior D'Audrio Patton added 15 points and seven rebounds. Junior Korbin McClain and senior Cameron Blue also reached double-figures in scoring with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
Junior Richard Benedyth was the final part of the UAM trio to have seven assists.
Xavier Husky led the Mustangs with 14 points. Mon'Darrius Benson added 12 points.
The Weevils continue their home stand this Thursday against Northwestern Oklahoma State. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. inside Steelman Field House.
