DURANT, Oklahoma — The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team opened Great American Conference play on the road Thursday night with a 73-65 loss to Southeastern Oklahoma State.
After trailing by one point at halftime and by as much as six points four minutes into the second half, the Weevils (0-3, 0-1 GAC) posted a 9-0 scoring run, capped by a back-to-back three pointers from senior Jamal Peterson to take a 44-41 lead with 14:35 remaining.
Southeastern (2-1, 1-0 GAC) responded by outscoring UAM 12-4 over a period of four minutes to get on top by 10 points with 9:34 remaining.
Trailing by double-digits, the Weevils fought back to trim the deficit to five points with 3:07 remaining. Junior Brandon Scott scored six straight points for UAM to lead that rally.
UAM ended the game shooting 47 percent from the field (26-for-55), 33 percent on three-pointers (7-for-21) and 55 percent on foul shots (6-for-11). Southeastern shot 51 percent from the field (27-for-53), 35 percent on three-pointers (8-for-23) and 52 percent on foul shots (11-for-21).
Peterson led the Weevils with 16 points, followed by Scott with 15 points off the bench. Senior Andre Brown also reached double-digits in scoring with 10 points and led the team in rebounding with seven.
Southeastern outrebounded UAM 39-25, including an 18-11 edge on the offensive glass. The Savage Storm used those offensive rebounds for a total of 20 second-chance points. Southeastern's Sami Bzai hit six three-pointers and finished with a game-high 21 points.
The Weevils are back in action on Saturday at East Central. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. in Ada, Oklahoma.
