JONESBORO, Arkansas — The University of Arkansas at Monticello men's basketball team played its third and final exhibition game of the 2015-16 season on Saturday night in a 104-71 loss to Arkansas State inside the Convocation Center.
The Red Wolves started the first half outscoring the Weevils 8-2 in the first four minutes and later grabbed a double-digit lead at the 12:22 mark. UAM responded with an 11-2 run, highlighted by a pair of three-pointers from senior Jamal Peterson to cut the deficit down to three points at 21-18 at the midway point of the half.
A-State took advantage of 17 fouls called against UAM in the first half by sinking 19-of-20 foul shots. In addition, the Red Wolves made 50 percent of their shots and only committed two turnovers in the first 20 minutes, leading to a 55-35 advantage at the break.
The Red Wolves maintained at least a 20-point lead throughout the rest of regulation.
Senior Richard Benedyth led the Weevils with 18 points, half coming on foul shots. Senior Jamal Peterson had 12 points, all on three-pointers. Seniors Evan Sims and Andre Brown each added 10 points. Brown led the team in with nine rebounds.
UAM finished the game shooting 32 percent from the field (20-for-63), 33 percent on three-pointers (10-for-30) and 70 percent on foul shots (21-for-30). A-State improved upon its first half shooting to end the night at 56 percent from the field (34-for-61), 31 percent on treys (5-for-16) and 78 percent on foul shots (31-for-40).
The Weevils wrap up the 2015 portion of the schedule next week with non-conference home games on Monday night and Saturday afternoon.
